“That’s what Aaron said too. I don’t mind though. I like the idea of taking care of my bosses.” Aspen was back to bouncing as he stared at Bas.

“Good to know.” Bas saluted him with the mug before he took a sip. Hmm, perfectly made. “Thanks.”

“Uh…” Aspen didn’t seem to be able to stand still.

“Would you like to ask me something?”

“Yes!” Aspen seemed relieved.

“Go ahead,” Bastian encouraged.

“Does your mate know what you are? Well, I guess we are?”

“No, he doesn’t,” Bastian replied. “I’m working on it.”

“Okay! I just wanted to make sure. I suspect that I’ll see a lot of him. He’s so nice, so I hope so. I just don’t want to mess up.”

It was a smart question. And yes, Bas planned to have Hudson with him as often as possible. Even if it was just for a make-out session in his office. “Just do your best. Ask questions when you have them. We’ll be patient, I promise. If something does happen, be honest and we’ll help you through it.”

“Thanks! I’ll admit you were a little scary looking when I first saw you.”

“I might look like a criminal but I’d never hurt you. And I won’t let anyone else either,” Bastian promised.

“I knew that as soon as I looked deeper. I can see auras,” Aspen told him. “Part of my mom’s line. You’re not as bright as your mate but I could see that you’re honest, protective, and proud. Not a bad combination.”

Something to dig in deeper later.

“Your mate is all golds and whites. Brightest human that I’ve ever seen. He is amazing!”

“And mine,” Bastian claimed, wanting there to be no mistake about that.

Aspen grinned. “Obviously.”

Okay, so that was a little territorial. “I’m going to work now.”

“About time!” Aaron called from the break room.

“Don’t make me come in there.” He winked at Aspen as he threatened Aaron. It was good that the little fairy didn’t seem scared of him.

Aspen went off to find Aaron to complete his paperwork and Bas strolled to his office. The files were still on his desk.

He sat in his chair and sipped the strong brew, knowing that he would need it. Opening the first file, he dove into whatever the council sent. It wouldn’t be good.

Hyena pack moving in this direction.

The pack would terrorize towns before moving on. The council had sent out teams to track them down, but the pack was already gone by the time the teams arrived. Bastian rose to walk over to the dry erase board where he could put his notes.

First things first would be to track where the pack had been then calculate their next destination. He hoped to at least do that before he needed to leave for his date. Bas was going to have to rope some of the boys into his plan.

Chapter Eight

Hudson

He knocked on the front door with his duffel bag in the hand. It was quiet around the property, and it felt a little weird walking from his truck by himself. There seemed to be more toys out on the lawn so the guys must have been out there recently.

Hudson frowned when no one came to the door. Bastian had told him that he could just walk in. That just seemed so rude. Of course, if Hudson got his way, he and Bastian were about to get a whole lot closer soon, so maybe it would be okay?

Something hit the front window, catching Hudson’s attention.
