Emma’s stomach sank. She didn’t want him to leave feeling unwelcome.“Wait, I didn’t mean to—”

Lucas waved a hand, chuckling softly.“It’s okay. I’ll let you work. Don’t worry about me.”

She watched him leave, feeling guilty and frustrated. Why does he make me feel so… flustered? she thought.

Later, as she finally took a break, Emma unwrapped the package Lucas had left behind. Inside was a small notebook, hand-bound, with a note that read:

“For your thoughts, your sketches, your dreams. For the moments we haven’t shared yet.”

Her heart warmed, but she also felt a pang of frustration at how easily her own nerves and words could miscommunicate. She realized this was only the beginning—their connection was delicate, full of sparks and misunderstandings, and yet, she wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Outside, the afternoon sun peeked through the clouds, and Emma smiled softly. Slow-burn love, indeed, she thought. And somehow, she knew, even with awkward missteps, the story between her and Lucas was only just beginning.

Chapter 7:

Honest Moments

The next morning, Emma was rearranging books on the top shelf when her phone buzzed. A message from Lucas appeared:

“Coffee? And this time, I promise no surprises—just us and some pastries.”

She smiled, feeling a flutter of excitement. Maybe slow-burn love doesn’t have to be awkward all the time.

By mid-morning, she arrived at the café, spotting Lucas already seated, a small bouquet of daisies on the table. He looked up, green eyes lighting up as he saw her.

“Hey,” he said softly, standing to pull out her chair.

“Hey,” Emma replied, taking her seat, feeling a mix of nerves and anticipation.

“I wanted to apologize for yesterday,” Lucas said earnestly, his gaze meeting hers.“I shouldn’t have assumed… and I didn’t want to make you feel pressured.”

Emma shook her head, smiling gently.“No, it’s fine. I overthought things, and I worry too much. I didn’t want you to feel like I was brushing you off.”

A comfortable silence fell between them as they sipped their drinks, the warmth of the café wrapping around them like a blanket.

Lucas reached across the table, brushing his fingers against hers.“I like that we can be honest with each other,” he said quietly.“I like that we’re taking our time, figuring things out.”

Emma’s heart swelled.“Me too. It’s… nice to not feel rushed. To know that whatever this is… it’s ours.”

He smiled, a tender, reassuring smile.“Exactly. Ours.”

For the first time since their chance meeting under the stars, Emma felt a sense of calm certainty. The slow-burn romance, full of quiet moments, gentle sparks, and honest words, was exactly what she had been craving. And sitting across from Lucas, with their fingers brushing and the morning sunlight spilling across the table, she realized this was only the beginning of something beautiful.

Chapter 8:

Rain-Kissed Laughter

The sky threatened rain all afternoon, and Emma found herself hurrying through the streets of Ashwood after work, umbrella in hand. To her surprise, Lucas appeared at the corner, holding an extra umbrella.

“Perfect timing,” he said, smiling.“Care for a walk? I promise it won’t be just a drizzle of awkwardness this time.”

Emma laughed, letting him guide her under the shared umbrella.“I think I can handle some drizzle, especially with good company.”

They wandered toward the park, raindrops pattering gently on the umbrella. Lucas pulled out his camera.“Even a rainy day can look magical,” he said, snapping pictures of the wet cobblestones reflecting the lamplights.

Emma couldn’t resist.“Let me try!” she said, taking the camera. She captured him mid-laugh, raindrops clinging to his hair, his grin infectious.

“You got me,” he said playfully, leaning closer.“I think you’re better than me already.”
