But Chloe appeared from the other side, playful grin in place, holding two tickets for the Ferris wheel.“Come on, Emily! You’re not going to let him steal all the fun, are you?”

Emily hesitated. Her heart thumped as she realized she had to choose — at least temporarily — who to spend her first festival moments with. She took a deep breath and went with Chloe, climbing into the Ferris wheel car with her.

“Hey, it’s crowded up here, huh?” Chloe teased, nudging Emily lightly.

Emily laughed, feeling the rush of excitement Chloe always seemed to bring.“Yeah… it’s… fun.”

Below, Luke watched them go, a small frown creasing his brow. He sipped his cider, trying to mask the twinge of jealousy that twisted in his chest.

Once the Ferris wheel reached the top, Chloe leaned close.“You know,” she whispered,“I’ve never told anyone this, but I like you. A lot.”

Emily’s heart skipped a beat. The thrill, the danger of confessing something so bold, made her feel alive.“Chloe… I…”

Chloe leaned back, her expression softening.“Hey, no pressure. I just wanted you to know. I like being around you, and I think you know that already.”

Meanwhile, Luke’s words echoed in her mind: I like you — a lot. And I’m willing to wait, to fight for this, if you want me to.

Emily’s heart twisted. Luke’s steady affection, Chloe’s electric energy — she liked them both, and the festival lights only made it harder to think clearly.

By the end of the night, Emily walked home, heart tangled, realizing that the Fall Festival hadn’t just been about rides, games, or caramel apples. It had been about realizing that senior year was about choices, about hearts, and about the messy, thrilling, unpredictable thing called love.

And Emily Harper was right in the middle of it.

Chapter 11:

Pressure and Decisions

The week after the Fall Festival, Emily Harper felt the pressure mounting. Friends at school kept asking about her love life, teasing her relentlessly about her“triangle situation.” Even casual conversations in the hallways seemed loaded with expectation.

“Emily, are you going to choose already?” her friend Sarah asked during lunch, nudging her playfully.

Emily sighed, stirring her iced tea.“I don’t know, Sarah. It’s complicated.”

“Complicated?” Sarah laughed.“You’ve had months to decide! Luke’s sweet and reliable. Chloe’s exciting and fun. You can’t have both forever.”

Emily wished it were that simple. Her heart raced at the thought of both of them, and the more she tried to analyze her feelings, the more tangled they became.

That afternoon, Emily stayed after school to finish a group project with Chloe. As they worked together, Chloe leaned close, her hand brushing Emily’s as she pointed at the notes.“You know,” Chloe said softly,“I don’t want to fight anyone for your attention. I just want you to notice me. You already do… right?”

Emily’s chest tightened.“Chloe… I do notice you. I just…” She trailed off, unsure how to explain the pull she felt toward both of them.

Before Chloe could respond, Luke appeared at the door, holding a stack of papers. His expression softened when he saw Emily.

“Hey,” he said gently.“I thought I’d help you guys with the project. We can finish this faster together.”

Chloe’s playful grin didn’t waver.“The more, the merrier, right?”

Emily felt her heart caught in the middle again. Luke’s presence was grounding, comforting — the safe choice. Chloe’s energy made her feel alive, thrilling, impossible to ignore.

As they worked side by side, Emily realized she couldn’t avoid the truth any longer: she had to face her feelings. The pressure from friends, the teasing, the awkward moments — all of it pointed to the same thing. She needed to make a choice, or at least begin to.

That night, Emily lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. She knew senior year wasn’t just about classes and college applications anymore. It was about love, messy and complicated, and she was right in the middle of it, heart tangled between two people she cared for more than she’d ever imagined.

And for the first time, Emily decided she would no longer ignore her feelings — not completely. The question was: which side of her heart would she follow first?

A Step Closer
