Chapter Twenty-Four

Axe made quick work of loosening the rope from his father’s wrists. His father in turn let him loose and immediately grabbed his weapons.

“We have to go after Leanna,” Axe said, patting his pocket for the car keys.

“Hey, what about me?” Leanna’s father asked.

“Leave him there,” Axe’s father said. “This Cano business doesn’t involve us.”

“Leanna’s going to be my wife,” Axe said, untying Leanna’s father. “We need to follow her and make sure she’s safe. The kid might be up to no good.”

The rumble of motorcycles disturbed the quiet residential area. Engines cut off in front of Gabriel’s house.

“Let’s move.” Axe stepped toward the door.

A thousand volts slammed into him, and pain sizzled, taking control of his muscles. He hit the floor, unable to break the fall.

“What the fuck?” Axe’s father wheeled around.

“Drop it.” Leanna’s father shoved his gun against Axe’s temple.

“Pendejo!” Axe’s father snarled, baring his teeth, but he let the gun drop with a thud.

Axe gasped for breath as the stun gun shock receded. Two against one. His chances were good. He panted hard, groaning as if in pain, then whipped out his hand and yanked Leanna’s father’s foot.

The opening was all his dad needed. He slammed into Leanna’s father, shoving him onto the floor.

“Axe, get the gun,” his father shouted, holding onto Leanna’s father’s arm.

Axe twisted the gun from Tomas’s grip and aimed at his temple. “What was that all about? I thought we agreed to work together. Leanna needs us right now. You don’t seriously think Cano is going to invite her to a tea party, do you?”

“I was told to bring you two to the party,” Tomas said.

“Why?” Axe asked.

Axe’s father pointed his gun at Tomas. “Any last words?”

Tomas glared at father and son. “You need to let me bring you into Cano’s mansion as prisoners.”

“Ha, you’re nuts.” His father kicked Leanna’s father. “Die like a dog the way you killed Dom.”

“Stop it.” Axe pushed his dad. “We need Tomas to get into the mansion. Let’s go.”

His dad lost his balance, enabling Tomas to shrug his way free. He picked up his gun and shoved it down his pants. “You want into the mansion or not?”

“I’m in.” Axe patted his pocket for the car key and followed Leanna’s father out the kitchen door.

They jumped the back fence and headed for the Toyota, but when Axe pushed the key in to unlock it, a dirty white van screamed around the corner. It came to a stop, and the back doors opened.

Blue Skull jumped out, pointing a gun at Axe.

“Get in,” Tomas commanded. He pushed Axe into the back. He rolled into the cargo area and pointed to the Toyota where Axe’s father was unlocking the door.

“Should I shoot him?” Blue Skull swung the gun toward Axe’s father.

“No time. Let’s get out of here,” Tomas said. He climbed into the passenger seat, leaving Blue Skull in the back with Axe.

Blue Skull shut the back doors, and the van lurched, turning the corner on two wheels.
