“You never told me. You usually tell me everything.”
Leanna patted her good friend and mock yawned. “I didn’t think it was a big deal. Don’t worry about me, okay?”
“Sure, guess I overreacted,” Nikki said. “But you know how my brother is. He loves to exaggerate and make everything more dramatic.”
“He’s a good kid,” Leanna said.
But Nikki was right. Denton could make a mountain out of a molehill, which was great when it came to his marketing ideas, not so much with keeping secrets. Fortunately, her lies fit, and he would crosscheck with Nikki, and they would be like hound dogs on the wrong trail—busily looking for a married baker with a jealous wife.
Nikki yawned in response. “I’ll show you the dick pics tomorrow. I made some pretty awesome replicas.”
“You and your photographic memory.” Leanna eeked out a giggle. “Can’t wait to compare and contrast.”
Nikki elbowed her. “Not just photographic memory, but hand memory. I can identify a dick in the dark.”
“We should have a contest at our next Bumblebee party.” This time, Leanna’s laughter was real. “Whoever would have guessed baking could be so much fun?”
“Especially when Bumblebees buzz!” Nikki hip-bumped Leanna. Giggling, she sauntered from the bedroom.
Leanna wadded up the warning note and tossed it in the wastebasket. Someone already knew something, and they didn’t want her to look for Carmelita.
No one in Leanna’s family would want to stop the young girl, if she was still alive, from reaching the border. On the other hand, no one believed she was alive. The married man who fathered her thought the baby died by abortion. Everyone else believed she died shortly after being adopted.
Unable to sleep, Leanna logged on to her security account to go through the bakery’s security videos.
Hours later, she found him. The swagger. The sexy backside, the broad shoulders, black leather in sweltering heat, and dark glasses in the shade.
Those dark glasses hid his eyes.
He had watchful eyes. No doubt about it. He watched, and he didn’t like anyone aware of his watching.
Except Leanna knew.
Had always known.
He watched her, but it wasn’t because of interest or attraction. He watched because he was watchful.
She’d never understood why he watched, because he never responded to her overtures.
The message wasn’t a coincidence, but something more disturbing.
