“We’ve got them,” Sam said. “Taking the girl into protective custody.”
“Will it help if we meet her over there?” Leanna asked.
“No, it’s not necessary. The Nevada police will drive her partway, and we’ll take her the rest of the way back. She should be back by morning.”
“May I speak to her?” Leanna asked. “Remind her to check her blood sugar. Her insulin. She has diabetes.”
“We can’t patch her in right now,” Sam said. “But I’ll pass everything on to her. Let her know you know she’s safe. Don’t worry, they’re interviewing her and will do a physical examination. She’s in good hands.”
“I can’t believe this.” Leanna stomped her feet and threw up her hands. “I can’t just sit here and do nothing.”
“Leanna won’t rest until she’s back,” Axe said, taking the phone off speaker. He didn’t want Sam to hear Leanna fret and drive herself nuts.
“Then you best take care of her. She’s going to overstress herself. I sent through the information she gathered about the Collector and the rape houses. Called the FBI about the crooked politician and the rest of the clues she gathered from that young man. They’re going to pick him up for questioning.”
“He’s going to think Leanna squealed.” Axe wiped his forehead.
“I promised him I wouldn’t give him away,” Leanna said, tapping Axe’s shoulder to listen in. He put it back on speaker.
“Nothing to worry about,” Sam said. “They traced the call from Leanna’s phone, and they’ll probably use him to catch the rest of the bad actors. He’ll get immunity or a deal.”
“I hope so,” Leanna said. “He’s a good kid. The nicest one of the bunch.”
“Leanna, you did a great job.” Sam’s voice boomed. “You just might be the one who busts the trafficking ring in the entire Northeast.”
“Let’s not count ourpollosbefore they hatch,” Axe joked, feeling a wave of relief warming his body.
“I’m sure you two are worn out,” Sam said. “If there’s nothing else, I’ll contact you in the morning. Leanna, try and get some rest. I’m sure your daughter will be glad to see you bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.”
So would I, Axe thought, hanging up.
Before Leanna could climb the wall, he swept her off her feet, carried her to the guest room, and kicked the door shut.
It was time. He’d waited long enough with that ring box bulging in his pocket.
It was time to bring his woman home.
