“You’re sure she’s your girl?” Axe moved to take the rifle case off the sofa. “Sit, please.”

Reluctantly, but more because her knees were jelly, she sat, then crossed her arms. “Of course, I’m not sure, but I can’t stay here and do nothing.”

“Why not? Have you considered there’s no runaway girl? That someone wants to put you in a dangerous situation? You seem to think you’re going to catch up with this runaway girl and sneak across the border with her.”

“I didn’t exactly mean I’d need to sneak her across the border,” Leanna said. “I have my passport. Why wouldn’t I go to the point of entry and walk over?”

“What about this girl, if she exists? What will you do with her?”

“Protect her. If she’s not my daughter, I’ll give her back to Ana and Eduardo.”

“And if she is?”

“I can’t tell you.” Leanna swallowed, realizing she might have compromised Carmelita’s safety. “She’s not supposed to exist.”

He crossed over and parked himself directly in front of her, so she was staring at his belt buckle. The brass face of a lion snarled at her, teeth exposed. Where had she seen it before?

“I know,” he said. “But you came out the front door.”
