The same way you knew when you had true love, the same way you knew when you should do something as important as what I was about to.
I moved away from her and she pretended to pout, then reached back for me.
“No, there’s no way you’re going back on that call to Wes or whoever.” She giggled.
“There’s no way Wes or whoever will have any of my attention with you around.”
“Then come back here. I want more,” she purred and a hum of satisfaction slipped from her lips when I ran my fingers over the tight creamy skin of her stomach.
“You’ll get more,” I promised. “I have something to ask you.”
“Yes.” She nodded vigorously and I laughed.
“Baby you don’t know what I’m going to ask you.”
“Whatever it is, it’s a yes from me.” She pulled the sheet over her breasts and sat up nestling her hair over her shoulder.
I hoped it was yes.
I pulled my boxers back on deciding I’d do this properly, even in my limited clothing. The original plan was at the restaurant on the beach she loved surrounded by candlelight.
This felt better.
Jia looked on in curiosity as I moved to the night stand and pulled out a little velvet box.
She didn’t see the box properly until I came around to her side of the bed. Then she bolted up and her mouth dropped open.
I got down on one knee and she covered her mouth.
“Xander…”
“Yes, baby.”
“What are you doing? I mean it looks like you’re doing something and I think I know what it is, but please don’t let that be another necklace. Not that I didn’t love the last necklace.”
She always babbled when she got nervous and her cheeks would flush with that soft rose color.
“What do you want it to be?” I decided to tease.
She shook her head and blinked. “The thing my heart wants the most.”
“What’s that?”
“You.”
Thank God for that.
I snapped the box open and she brought her hands closer to her heart when her beautiful eyes saw the princess cut diamond ring I had made for her. Anya helped me design it.
When I decided I’d do this I couldn’t think of anyone better to take ring shopping.
From the look of Jia I could tell I’d done the right thing. her eyes brimmed with tears.
“Xander…”
I took her hand and held it. “Jia… I’ve said you’ve had me from hello and I meant that. I promised your father I’d take care of you but I always planned to do that. I dreamed of us having happy days together, the kind you get lost in. But lost in the way you feel because it’s so unreal. I had a lot of years where I was lost in the worse of ways. Lost in darkness. Then I found you and you had me lost in you. Lost in love with you. No one compares to you. It would be the greatest honor and privilege to me, if you were my wife. Please be mine.”
I might not be the best romantic, but that sounded pretty damn good to me. My heart took over and did it all. It spoke to her, speaking words from my soul and everything that made me, me.
