“Jamison? Your son?”
Dirk nods. I hold out one hand and he takes it, gently but firmly. His is warm. I squeeze it and he squeezes mine back. My stomach flutters.
“Independently,” Dirk said. “I had nothing to do with his decision. Well, I gave him the finance – the Franklin house sold straight away – but I had no idea he’d buy your apartment with it. Only just found out. That was him on the phone. I’m sorry you missed out. Lucy, I don’t care how many diamonds you have.”
“You’re making no sense, Doc.”
“I’ve only ever done this once before.”
“Done what?”
“Fallen in love. Lucy, will you marry me?”
“Do you want me to have another heart attack?”
“No, no! Think about it. We’re good together. Remember when we danced? And at the house in Franklin? I want to wake up next to you every day.”
“Funny way to show it. I know we’re good together, but you gave me the brush off big time. I want my own security. I don’t want to rely on a man’s loyalty again. No offence, but you are a man.”

Iswallow. Lucy doesn’twant me to provide her with a home, like Millie did. I guess if she wants independence, but still agrees to see me, it’s a draw; a win, of a kind.
“I didn’t expect to fall in love again so soon, but you’re irresistible, Lucy Beston. I want to make you happy. Lucy?”
