Chapter Seven
Theo
Zeph’s trip to the store seemed to take forever. I paced my room, trying not to freak out but, well, freaking out. Wasthisthe next thing the curse would throw at me?! Another child I would have to raise alone?
“It’s not fair!” I blurted.
Tau meowed curiously at me.
I sighed and sagged onto the bed. “My children shouldn’t have to pay for their great-great-grandfather’s mistake,” I told her. “I… I can get by. I’m used to the curse running my life. But it’s not fair to Mindy. I thought… I thought maybe that guy really was a genie… she had everything she wished for. And so did I. Now…” I shook my head and wondered if I should pack now or not.
It wasn’t that I didn’t think Zeph loved me, I believed him. But my parents had loved each other too, before they split. Our love couldn’t beat the Fae King’s curse, could it?
“But my daughter… she shouldn’t have to suffer with a single parent and a childhood in shitty apartments, watching her father scrape together pennies every month… She doesn’t deserve a life like that and neither does this baby…” Somehow, as I spoke, I became convinced I truly was pregnant again. “I wish I could take it from them…”
“Your great-grandfather was selfish,” said a female voice.
I spun in shock. “What?! Who?!”
Tau stalked toward me and my jaw dropped as she shifted. Sure, I had seen a lot of shifters, but never one pretending to be a normal housecat!
“After my father granted him a favor, your ancestor demanded it at once. When it was implied it would be granted to someone in his line and never him directly, he took offense.” She smiled and I felt a chill. The daughter of the Fae King! Had she been our cat all this time?! “But you… you have shown selflessness.” Tau, if that was her name, spread her hands out in front of her. “The curse has been lifted.”
“Thank you,” I whispered.
She rolled her hands in the air for a moment and a cat that looked identical to Tau appeared. The car meowed, then jumped and scurried away.
“It’s a boy,” she said.
“I don’t think they’ll notice,” I said, looking where the cat had gone.
“No,” she laughed. “The child you will raise with your new alpha. The one in your belly is a boy.”
I clasped my hands over my stomach with a gasp.
“Our debt is paid,” she said.
With that, she vanished in a rainbow shower of sparks. I stared after her, wide-eyed.
“Thank you,” I whispered again.
“You’re welcome,” breathed a voice in my ear. This time, it was male. I spun, expecting Zeph, but saw nothing… but a swirl of purple smoke…
