“Aren’t you coming?” she called back. She heard Lucas laugh, and then he was beside her again, kissing her as he undid the buttons on his shirt.

This room, theirroom, had been a lot of things to them. It had been a place where they’d argued and teased each other and tried their best to keep their distance. But tonight, it became something else, too: the honeymoon suite it was meant to be. As the evening slipped by, the final walls between them came crashing down, and they finally gave in to each other’s gravity.

Kendra yawned and rolled over. The morning sun spilled across her, bright and warm, and she absentmindedly patted thebed beside her. Memories from the night before came rushing back — Lucas racing her into the ocean. Kissing her. Holding her in his arms. Taking her to bed. Kendra blushed as she remembered the way he’d looked at her as though she were the most precious person in the world.

Where was Lucas? Kendra patted the bed again, expecting to feel his familiar form, but he wasn’t there. She blinked her eyes open, squinting against the warm morning sunlight, but she was alone in bed.

Kendra’s heart sank as she sat up, rubbing her eyes. She scanned the room, but Lucas was nowhere in sight. Her heart sank.

Of course he wasn’t. Last night had been about seizing the moment. They hadn’t talked about what it meant for them, if it meant anything at all. For Kendra, their night together had been magical in a way she’d never forget.

But for Lucas, maybe it had been just another night. He might expect them to go back to being friends. Or — and Kendra’s heart froze at this thought — he might not even be here anymore. Lucas had a vacation house near Cabo. It would have been easy for him to wake up early and slip away. Maybe their night together hadn’t been the beginning of something, but an end.

Tears pricked at Kendra’s eyes, even as she told herself not to be silly. She was imagining the worst-case scenario, but maybe Lucas was on the balcony or taking a walk around the resort. She got up, took a quick shower in the bathroom, and wrapped herself in a towel. A quick scan of the sitting area and balcony showed that he really wasn’t in the room. Kendra fiddled with the edge of her towel, trying not to worry.

“Be reasonable,” she told herself. “You knew you were going back to LA in a couple of weeks, anyway. Even if this was a one-night thing, it was worth it.”

“What was worth it?”

Kendra looked up, her eyes widening and her heart lifting as Lucas stepped through the door. He was carrying a tray of coffee, fruit, and pastries, and he smiled at her warmly. He looked even more handsome now, in the soft morning light. And he washere.

“Nothing.” Kendra wanted to laugh in relief. Lucas had just been getting breakfast, not running off to his house to get away from her. She’d been silly to imagine that, but her experience with Aaron had prepared her to assume that everyone was going to run off and leave her sooner or later.

“Nice towel, by the way.”

Even though Lucas had seen her in much less than a towel the night before, Kendra still blushed and held it tighter around herself.

“I honestly don’t know why this keeps happening. I never walk around in a towel in front of people.”

“Maybe you’ve been trying to seduce me.” Lucas went into the bedroom, and Kendra followed. He set the tray on the bed, then turned back to wink at her. “It worked.”

“I was not!” Kendra protested. “Well, maybe I was, a little.”

Lucas came back to her, grinning, and pulled her in for a quick, warm kiss that made Kendra’s heart race. “Now get back in bed. This is called ‘breakfast in bed’ for a reason.”

“And why are we having breakfast in bed?” Kendra asked. She dropped the towel, blushing when she saw Lucas’s appreciative look, and pulled on one of his overlarge T-shirts from his open suitcase before climbing back into bed.

“I thought you might appreciate a morning off from the judgmental looks of our fellow guests.” He winked again as he got into bed beside her. “And Susie seemed pleased. I think she was worried we weren’t close enough, but me bringing you breakfast in bed really made her smile.”

“Did she mention what activities we’ll be doing today?” Kendra beamed and speared a piece of cantaloupe with one of the forks Lucas had brought. “You got my favorite!”

“You’ve been eating practically a whole cantaloupe every morning.” Lucas smiled and reached for his coffee. “It wasn’t hard to figure out.”

“Well, thanks.” Kendra reclined and popped the fruit into her mouth.

“You’re welcome. So, activities: apparently, we’ll be snorkeling in the bay and touring a local historical site today.”

“Great.” Kendra yawned. “I’m looking forward to it.”

“Then why the yawn?”

“I’m also tired. I don’t know if you noticed, but I was up kind of late last night.”

“I did notice something about that.” Lucas nodded sagely. “Have some coffee. We have some time before the activities start.”

“Perfect.”

They spent the morning in bed, lazily eating the breakfast Lucas had brought and chatting. Not only had he brought her favorite fruit, but he’d also made her coffee the way she liked it, with milk and sugar.
