‘The best sex of your entire life?’

‘Yes, well so far.’ She ran a finger down his chest. ‘Unless you think you can do better.’

‘I’ll give it my best shot.’

He picked her up and threw her down on the bed. She laughed as he struck a few really bad model poses before climbing up the bed over her. He kissed her and she couldn’t help giggling against his lips. He made her so damn happy; how could anyone be opposed to that?

CHAPTER 15

Alex woke the next morning, wrapped in Quinn’s arms. Life really couldn’t be more perfect right now.

Quinn kissed her on the forehead and she looked up and smiled at him. ‘Why don’t you come and join me in the shower and then we can pick up Zara from her Brownie sleepover and go for breakfast somewhere.’

‘That sounds perfect.’

He climbed out of bed and she had the pleasure of watching him walk across the room to the ensuite completely and gloriously butt-naked. He disappeared into the bathroom.

She stretched and reached out for her phone. She was surprised to see she had been tagged multiple times on the neighbourhood forum. The forum had started a year or so ago as a place to bring the community together. It was supposed to be a place people could advertise cake sales, or sell bits of furniture or ask for recommendations for plumbers, builders or gardeners. It was also supposed to be a place for lost dogs or cats. What it had turned into was a cesspit of moaners. If someone hadn’t parked their car correctly, you better believe a photo of their bad parking would go up on the forum shaming the person for being irresponsible or selfish. If there was a dog on the beach in the summer, there were multiple photos of the dog and the owner with locals berating people for not knowing the rules. If a neighbour had the audacity to have a barbeque, yep they were hauled over the coals too. Affairs were often outed on the forum too, people’s private business – it really wasn’t a pleasant place to visit and Alex avoided it as much as she could. It was the first time she’d been tagged in any post there though, what could she have possibly done wrong?

She groaned when she saw the post was from Tina, the woman at Alberto’s the night before. She knew what this would be about before she even opened it.

She clicked on it and rolled her eyes when she read it.

Tina Parker-Barrington

I had a meal at Alberto’s last night which was ruined by the behaviour of one of the other customers, Alexandra Campbell. When my husband died I knew there would never be any other man for me, out of respect for my dearly departed William, but only a few years after Liam Campbell died, Alexandra has been seen cavorting with three separate men this week, like some kind of floozie. The man has barelyhad enough time to go cold. But the worst crime of all is that one of those men is none other than Liam’s brother, Quinn. I was shocked to see them holding hands throughout their meal, kissing at the table for everyone to see, when that kind of behaviour is best reserved for one’s own home, then they rushed off at the end of the meal to do lord knows what. They were so preoccupied with their forthcoming coitus they didn’t even have the decency to pay.

But it’s the betrayal that stings the most for me. Liam was a good, kind boy who many of us knew from his gardening service he used to do around the town. I talked to him many times when he would come round and trim my bush and he always spoke about how much he loved his wife and daughter. He would be turning in his grave to know that Alexandra is cavorting with his brother behind his back. What kind of woman would do that?

And shame on Quinn Campbell too. I always thought he was a nice boy and I felt so sorry for him losing his younger brother. But then I find out he wanted nothing to do with Liam before he died and spent the whole of Liam’s funeral flirting with his wife. Then he swooped in here and started sleeping with her shortly after his brother’s death. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Alex started reading through the comments to see what people’s reactions were to this rant. The problem was the kind of people who went on the forum and read these posts and took the time to comment on them were the same old moaners who would berate someone forusing a plastic bag for shopping instead of a canvas one or for mowing their lawns on a Sunday, the day of rest. So, annoyingly, most of the comments agreed with Tina.

Verity Forbes-Davenport:It’s disgusting!

Jacqualyn Rumsey:Both of them are scum, poor Liam.

Jodie Brown:They should be ashamed of themselves.

Kim Trent:Sleeping with two brothers, sounds a bit incestuous to me.

Frankie Kennford:It’s not incestuous to sleep with two brothers, it’s incestuous to sleep with your own brother. Idiot.

Mary Mandalay:I can’t imagine how poor Violet will feel about this. Has anyone told her?

Tina Parker-Barrington:I have.

Jacqualyn Rumsey:I phoned her last night. She didn’t say a lot, I imagine she’s horrified.

Rosie McCoy:Violet is a very good friend of mine, I can tell you now she will be furious about this, Liam was always her favourite child and Quinn dishonouring his memory like this will be very upsetting.

Bella Millaburn:And what about poor Zara, she must miss her dad terribly and the one man she thought she could trust does this.

Verity Forbes-Davenport:Imagine if this works out and they get married, poor Zara will be raised by her uncle, how weird is that?

Jodie Brown:This whole thing is weird.

There were a few nice comments too but they were far outweighed by all the bad.
