With his free hand, he took hers and pulled her in front of him so when she opened her eyes, she’d see the most important question he’d ever asked in his life. He leaned down, his mouth at her ear. He had to stop himself from kissing the sensitive skin beneath the lobe that made her squirm.
“Open your eyes.”
When she did and read WILL YOU MARRY ME spelled out in pictures, her gasp echoed in the small space. “Oh my God. Aidan.”
She whirled around, her eyes wide, her lips parted. He cleared his throat and blew out a breath. With it, all of the nervousness left his body. Because the next words he said were true and pure.
“Megan, I love you. It’s as simple as that and yet those words feel inadequate for how I feel about you. I never saw you coming, but as soon as I saw you, I knew. Even though I fought it every step of the way until I knew I couldn’t fight it anymore. I’ve told you this before, but it bears repeating. You rescued me, Megan. And for that, I will be eternally grateful. Even when you’re driving me crazy with your messes.”
“Oh babe,” she breathed out, tears in her eyes.
He pulled the box out of his pocket and opened it. “Megan Gentry, will you do me the honor of being my wife?”
She covered her mouth with her hands, her eyes glued to the ring. “Oh my God, Aidan. It’s gorgeous.”
“You like it?”
“I love it.”
“Wanna wear it?”
She laughed through tears and held out her hand. He slid it on her ring finger, and his shoulders relaxed when it slid on perfectly. She stared at it for a moment before looking up at him and wrapping her arms around his neck.
“Yes, I’ll marry you.” She looked around the small room that he’d turned into her darkroom. “I can’t believe you did this for me.”
She brought her gaze back to him. “I can’t wait to wake up beside you every morning, fall asleep on your chest every night, have your babies. I can’t wait to begin our life together.”
Something deep in his soul sighed, and peace washed over him.
He lifted her up, cupping her ass as she wrapped her legs around his waist. His hand cupped the back of her head and tangled in her hair, bringing her mouth to his, sealing the deal with a kiss, soft and sweet.
“And we’re just getting started.”
