“I know, but I wanted an excuse to spend more time with you.” I reach across the seat and put my hand over hers. “You know, since we have my sister’s blessing now.”

“I’m honestly shocked she is okay with us dating.”

“So, we are, in fact, dating, right?” It feels dumb to ask her this, but I need to know for my own piece of mind.

“Yeah, I’m pretty sure that’s what I just said.”

“I know, I know. But earlier, when we had breakfast, you said you’dconsiderit.”

She turns her hand over until our fingers are locked together. “You seriously thought I wouldn’t want to be with you. I seem to remember being the one to instigate the kiss last night. That should have been answer enough.”

“I just want to make sure we’re on the same page,” I sigh, already regretting what I’m about to say because I don’t want to sound pathetic. “I haven’t dated anyone since you left. I couldn’t find it in me to do it.”

“Your friends didn’t give you shit about that?” The inside of the truck is only lit up by the dashboard lights, but I can see her eyebrows raise. “They seem like the types that would pressure you into finding the nearest pretty woman and pushing you toward them.”

“I never said they didn’t try.” I grin and she squeezes my hand. “I wasn’t interested.”

“That’s good to know.”

“What about you? Did you date anyone?”

“Please,” she scoffs. “Every town I visited I wanted to show you all the cool things I found.”

“You could have texted me back.”

“It hurt too much.”

“I’m sorry about all of that. I really am.” Even if I have to spend my life showing her how badly I feel about pushing her worries aside, I’ll do it. The curtain for the front window is pulled back, and a shadow fills the frame. “We should probably take your stuff inside before Eric calls the cops on us.”

“Yeah, you’re right.” She lets go of my hand and climbs out of the truck. “You grab the boxes. I’ll get the mattress.”

She closes the door and climbs on the tire to pull the mattress out of the bed of the truck before I’m even out. “Are you staying here tonight?”

“Probably not,” she says as she heads toward the front door. “My car is still at your sister’s house, and I’d like to sleep in an actual bed one more night.”

I pull the boxes toward me and pick them up. “You can stay in my bed.”

Lisa stops in her tracks. Shit. Maybe I shouldn’t have said that. One of these days I’ll stop blurting whatever comes to mind. Funnily enough, it only happens around her.

“That seems a little presumptuous considering we just started dating again.”

“I mean,” I scratch the back of my head. “Only if you want to. I’m not suggesting we have sex or anything. It’s completely up to you.”

Fuck. The stupidity keeps flowing. For all I know, she’s going to dump me because I can’t keep my mouth shut.

Instead…she laughs. “It’s a possibility. No need to be so serious. I haven’t seen you in months aside from small moments of stolen time.” She sets the mattress on the sidewalk and makes her way toward me. “You are going to be sick of me before you know it.”

I place the boxes on the ground and pull her toward me. My arms going around her waist, and hers around my neck. “That.” I kiss one cheek. “Will” The other. “Never.” My mouth meets hers and she melts into me. As much as I want to deepen the kiss, it’s cold out here. Also, we have plenty of time for it later. I pull away from her. “Happen.”

She rests her head on my chest and we bask in the moment. Finally, together after months apart. This time with my sister’s blessing. “I sure as hell hope not.”

The front door opens and Eric pokes his head out. “Is everything okay?”

Lisa lets go of me and turns around. “You gotta stop doing that.”

“Doing what?” He cocks his head to the side in mock confusion.

“Walking in on me and Devin.” She rushes to the mattress and picks it up. “If you don’t watch it, I’m going to think you’re spying on me.”
