She types something in with one hand and gestures toward the hallway with the other. “The movers came this morning and got all your stuff out of the house, including that sad plant in the hallway. Another crew is coming soon to paint and re-do the closet. They’ll have your room set up before dinner.”
“Wow, talk about efficiency.” I take a sip of coffee. “You didn’t have to do this, you know.”
“I did actually. It’s kind of my job.” She taps something on the tablet, then glances up at me again. “Also, for the record, your ex-roommates are human garbage. For real, I don’t know how you put up with them as long as you did. From everything Miles told me, they’re a fucking nightmare.”
I groan. “They weren’t always like that.”
“Yeah, I don’t think that’s actually true.” She taps her screen again and heads for the garage. “I’ll be in and out. Don’t do anything helpful—Miles will have my ass if you do.”
I lift the mug in a half-salute. “No risk of that.”
She disappears back through the door, leaving me in the kitchen with my half-empty coffee mug.
As I’m pouring my second coffee, I hear footsteps overhead. One set. Then another. A muffled thump. A door creaks open.
They’re awake. A giddy little bubble of excitement fills my body.
Jude is the first one down. He walks up behind me, wraps both arms around my waist, and kisses my shoulder without saying a word.
“Good morning to you, too.”
“You made coffee,” he says into my neck. “That’s hot.”
Reid’s gaze sweeps me from head to toe as he enters. He grabs a mug from the cabinet. “You know what else is hot? Eggs. You making any?”
I shoot him a look over my shoulder. “Good morning, Reid. It’s nice to see you. I’m doing great, thanks for asking.”
Reid snorts and grabs a carton of eggs from the fridge. “I vote that since Jude got the first kiss, he has to cook.”
I roll my eyes and take the eggs from him. “I’ll do it. You guys haven’t had my famous sausage, egg and cheese combo yet.”
I don’t get far before Reid catches a loose handful of my hair and gives it a gentle tug. He leans in and kisses me when I tilt my head back.
I move toward the stove and start pulling pans from the drawer while Jude sets out plates. Miles shows up next, fully dressed. He pauses in the doorway, eyes flicking from the stove to the table to me.
I can feel him trying not to interfere. I hate that he still feels like an outsider in this. He’s not.
“Want to help, Miles?” I ask, cracking the first egg into the bowl.
Miles steps forward and reaches for the bread. “Toast?”
“Perfect.”
Jude hums while he slices fruit. Reid cooks the sausage while I scramble the eggs and keeps grabbing my ass and squeezing. I giggle and poke him in the ribs.
When everything’s ready, I start to move toward the table.
“Not here,” Jude says, nodding toward the hallway. “Let’s eat in the little room near the library.”
Reid already has two plates in hand. “Good. The kitchen chairs suck.”
We eat. We pass food. We talk about what’s going on in the news today. It feels almost normal.
Which is exactly when my brain decides to ruin it.
My stomach tightens suddenly. I take another bite of eggs and try not to let the mood shift show on my face.
“You’re worrying,” Jude says gently.
