“So we bought them for you!” Sunny beamed, as if she couldn’t hold it back any longer.
“You’ll get to have a dance with each of them,” Jessica explained. “It’s like you can try them on for size.”
“They’re boys, not clothes,” Sunny said, nudging her with an elbow.
I’d thought my friends had done something hurtful, only to find out that they had just been looking out for me, wanting me to be happy.
“You guys…” I tried to think of something more profound to say, but came up empty. “Thank you,” was all I said as I blinked back tears.
All three of them closed in on me for a group hug.
“This is probably the most expensive birthday present I’ll ever get,” I said. “You know that, right?”
“Don’t worry, that’s it for the rest of your life,” Sunny said.
We all laughed.
I was both touched and relieved. Based on their reasoning, they had no clue I was seeing all three men at the same time.
I couldn’t help but wonder, though. Would they look at me differently if they knew?
What would they have thought if I told them that I couldn’t possibly imagine myself ever choosing?
