“I have also called in favors,” Luka said. “People to look out for you.”
“Bodyguards?” I asked.
Luka nodded. “If there’s anyone suspicious, anyone spying on you, they’ll know and report it to me.”
That did make me feel a little better. It didn’t take the sting off everything that happened, but it was reassuring.
“I’m so scared,” I said in a quiet voice.
“We’ll keep you safe,” Jaeson said, holding me close.
“We will always protect you,” Luka said, crowding in with me as well.
Despite the cold, despite the rain, with their arms around me, in that moment I almost believed them.
