Pizza sounds gr8. Watched u run. :) Can meet u outside school @ 6.

Adam’s heart did that crazy flip-flop thing as he stared at the words and replied back with a simple but stupid:K.

Bas plunked down beside him at the jock table, and all the guys started making kissing noises at him. He waved them off. “Pahlease, if you boys knew what was good for you, you’d all be kissing my royal white ass. At least then some of you would graduate on time.” He handed Adam a cheat sheet for French. “This is the stuff you were having trouble with. Review it between classes, and you’ll be stellar on that test Friday.”

“Thanks.” The page was pretty short but had some good hints to remember how to say a phrase or remember a response instead of “um, ah, huh?”

“So did you text the sleeping princess your eternal kisses?” Bas asked loudly. So much for his texts to Ru being a secret. Adam was very glad he hadn’t shared any details.

Suddenly everyone at the table was looking at Adam with interest. Most of them had girlfriends, cheerleaders, but he thought it was only for sex, since that’s all they talked about. None of them ever seemed to actually go on dates. Maybe that was part of being gay, wanting more; he didn’t know, and it worried him a little. “Yeah. We’ve been texting.”

Bas’s smile was bright enough to light up the whole lunchroom. Or maybe that was the glitter shadow he wore reflecting in the fluorescents. “Wonderful. See, there is a beginning for everything. Even if you ended up meeting said hottie in a horribly repressive place like the college library.” He looked around the table as he said the last word like he was hinting that maybe they should try it sometime. “After all, if a shy cutie like you can meet someone there, maybe the gorillas you sit with could find someone to grunt their intelligible shortcomings to.”

“You’re just pissed none of us bat for your team, Axelrod,” Nate threw back. He was dating the head cheerleader, Lisa Beck, who always wore the shortest skirts and had the biggest boobs on campus, which somehow was important to the guys on the football team. “Must be lonely being the only homo.” He fluttered his wrist, which really just looked like he had some sort of muscle spasm.

“Don’t, Nate,” Adam warned.

“Dish later, sweetie?” Bas got up, then leaned over and kissed Adam on the head, before wandering off. Adam let out a breath he didn’t realized he had been holding.

“So you met some hot chick at the library?” Nate asked. “Why did you need to go to the library?”

Adam sighed and for once wished he had to worry less about what the jocks would think about him studying.
