“At least the coffee there is good.”
“Thank goodness. The coffee at my last place was disgusting, as in stand-your-spoon-up-in-it disgusting,” Emory said, shuddering at the thought.
“Thanks for jumping in and helping with everything. You’ve not really stopped since you arrived.”
“I honestly don’t mind. I was always so flattered when I received Robbie’s email offering me a job here. I never thought I’d be able to take him up on his offer, but now look at me. I’vemy mate, a new job. I live in a castle with my nephew and his mate, and my father-in-law is not only the strongest Alpha but also a Duke.”
“It sounds just like a story,” Fran said with a grin.
“Not a believable one though.”
“Except it is,” Fran confirmed.
“It is.”
CHAPTER 32
Nearly an hour later, the others came back, Robbie and Christine with them.
“How is he?” Joe asked, rushing to the bedside.
“Sleeping peacefully,” Fran replied, with a gentle smile and relief in his voice.
“Thank goodness,” Joe replied. “We have food for you and Emory. I’ll stay with Jake while you eat. We also brought a large pot of coffee with us.”
“I’m all for the coffee,” Fran said, gently untangling himself from Jacob and settling him down.
Jacob was lyingin his favourite spot in the Bishop pack woods. His wolf was lying next to him, his head on Jacob’s chest. Jacob was stroking him and playing with his ears while looking up through the trees to the blue sky above. Jacob had been shocked when he joined his wolf here, as his wolf was now a stunning silver colour.
“Look at you, handsome. I wonder if you’ll stay this colour, or change back to your original brown? Whatever happens, I love you. I can’t believe the Alpha commanded me to sleep andrest and it worked. I really thought I was about to take my final breath.”
His wolf gave a low moan.
“I know, my friend, you feel as bad as I do, probably worse, if the silver fur is anything to go by. Just rest while I do my thinking. Don’t try and talk, just rest. What kind of beast puts silver on their claws?”
An angry growl emanated from his wolf.
“I know, right? Can you believe the Alpha cut his paws off while the wolf was still alive? Crazy right?”
His wolf huffed.
Jacob shook his head, a goofy smile on his face. “How amazing is Fran?”
A tired, happy bark was his wolf’s reply
“We’re going to have an amazing life together, well, if we survive.”
His wolf growled. We’ll survive and live a happy, fulfilled life.
“Rest, no talking, remember, save your energy,” Jacob gently reprimanded, while scratching his wolf behind his ear.
You should be saving yours as well.
“I am, I’m lying here while my body rests and hopefully doesn’t die on me. Can you imagine what my father would have done if I’d been poisoned in his pack? I doubt I would have had any of the care I’m getting now. I’d probably have ended up dying alone and forgotten.”
His wolf growled again. You wouldn’t have been alone.
“You know what I mean. He would have shouted at me, told me I was useless and then left me alone, probably only checking on me once a day, if that.”
