“No, I’m good. I uhm, I had a slight panic attack from reading the letter a few minutes ago. The appearance is in two days. Will you have enough time to do whatever it is you do?”

“That’s more than enough time. Do you need me to stop and make sure you straight?” Klarity really lucked up finding such an attentive and caring man. He loved the women in his family, and he extended that same love to me.

“No. Toneshia is on the way, so she’ll be here if I need anything. Thank you though. You’re always so kind,” I said showing my appreciation.

“Oh, Luca Brasi gon’ hold it down. Call me or Klarity when you make it home.”

“Will do. Thank you again, Royce.”

“Always.” He hung up with the line going dead. I placed the receiver down and sat back.

One thing I did know was Black mirrored Royce’s gentleman ways. He fussed and disguised it a lot by talking shit, but that man was just as attentive as his brother. If only he could forgive me once he was released.

CH. 14

GENESIS

The way a nigga couldn’t stop smiling from the sun hitting my body right now you would think it was different from the one beaming down when I had a lil’ rec time. The air smelled different out this muthafucka, too. Shit, I felt like I was hearing the birds for the first time. Being locked up and on a schedule altered a nigga brain pattern or something, no cap.

Yonnis took forever and a day to get a nigga from behind them bars, but he did it. Everything was dropped and my record was still squeaky out this bitch. Apparently, Brat was supposed to show, and she never did. I ain’t want to know what made her change her mind. I was sure whatever had her hesitating was the same thing that kept me up at night. If I missed her, I was sure her bratty ass missed me too. It wasn’t no if ands or buts about it. I introduced that pussy to real dick. It was throwing fits aight.

A slap on my back snapped me out my lil’ trance. I was reaching for my twins realizing they had been left at Brat crib. Now wasn’t the time to be playing with me. I was in a city without my crew. My paranoia was back, and I was ready to body a nigga.

“Lil’ nigga we in front of a courthouse with plenty blues. What the hell you reaching for?” Yonnis questioned stepping around me.

“It’s a force of habit, Yonnis. You would’ve been put down by now,” I jested.

His help wasn’t wanted but his help was what got me free. The trust we developed for one another added him to the list of people I could count on. It wasn’t shit but a handful to begin with. He was damn near number one on the list the way he ain’t drop the ball when it came to me and my freedom. The court appointed lawyer I had prior walked by making me want to smack fire from his ass for getting up there playing in that lady courtroom the way he did. I mugged his goofy the ass the entire time he walked up the steps.

“Let him be. Adele should’ve been here by now to scoop yo’ ass. Senior want you to come by the compound. What you doing?”

“He ain’t a priority so whenever I feel like dealing with him, I’ll deal with him,” I answered.

“When is that, Genesis? I got to tell him something.”

“Never. I already told his bitch ass to leave me the fuck alone one time. I ain’t gon’ keep saying it. Fuck him and everybody else over there. I ‘preciate you doing what you do best, but I’m sure I won’t need you again, and if I do… shit, come through.” I saluted him and took off to my whip.

Adele had sense to scoop me in my shit. I knew my baby Ruby from anywhere. She was straight factory with a lil’ tint. I loved everything ‘bout her pretty ass. Hopping in the driver’s seat, I sped off into traffic heading for the Peaks. My time in the Springs was done until I was ready to go back for my bread.

Once we hit the highway, I blasted a local artist by the name Kvng Qwan. All it took was a minute for me to get in my zone, and I was playing in traffic like it was my personal racetrack. You better believe I was out of there not giving a fuck what came next. I was off and out like Yonnis promised. It wasn’t shit else to talk about.

Adele turned down the radio to speak and I turned that hoe right back up. She was the last muthafucka I wanted to hear anything from. She ain’t have shit to spew but lies and I quite frankly was tired of hearing them. All she had to do was shut the fuck up while she had a ride back to the crib. She was gon’ find herself on the side of the highway otherwise.

My music was turned down once more which caused instant annoyance. “Aye, this ain’t the time to get on my nerves, Adele.”

“I’m trying to have a conversation with your ungrateful ass. Ain’t no eyes or ears on us so tell me what the hell happened for real, Black,” she uttered.

“Stop talking to me lady before I tell you something. I’m sparing you right now,” I said delivering her a hell of a mug.

“You so fuckin’ disrespectful. You’re everything Senior and that’s some sad ass shit for real.” She was trying to get me upset for real, but I had too much ammo to unload. My clip been ready since Senior opened his mouth giving a nigga an earful. Adele had a lot of explaining to do.

“Aye, who the fuck is Sophie?” I inquired. I figured I’d start light to see where the hell she take it.

“W-What? How am I supposed to know? Who you been talking to, Black?” Adele couldn’t even hold a straight face. Everything in her eyes screamed suspicion. The snake was trying to hide but wasn’t no grass for her to do so. That shit been cut.

“You might want to answer me. I’m almost at that point,” I warned her.

“She was a friend. We’re no longer cool so there’s that. The hell you so interested in the bitch for?”
