“Wait…theJack?” Berkley said, mouth gaping.

Logan’s eyes darted between the four women, and finally he said, “Okay, someone back up and tell the rest of us what the fuck is going on.”

“Logan,” their mother scolded.

“Sorry, Ma,” he said.

“Last month, Jessica and I went to the hockey tailgate together. And she had amomentwith Jack DeLuca, who is the Spartans’ goalie. She told me they met in Mexico, but I haven’t been able to get a word out of her about it otherwise, and Jack has been similarly tight-lipped with Aiden and the guys.”

“So it’s really him,” her mom said, stunned.

Jessica could only nod.

“Holy shit,” Berkley breathed.

“Will someone please tell me what’s going on?” Logan burst out.

“Delivery could use some work,” Kenzie said, pointing at Logan, “but I agree with him.”

With a resigned sigh, Jessica took a deep breath and said, “I met Jack about three and a half years ago, when we were on spring break in Cancún. We had…a thing.”

“Wait, is this that guy you texted us about?” Logan asked.

“Yes,” Berkley confirmed.

“It was a lot more than athing, Jessica,” her mother scolded. “Don’t cheapen it just because you don’t want to talk about it.”

“You’re right,” she said. “I don’t want to talk about it, so how about we move onto something else.”

“I’m just confused, honey,” her mom said.

“There’s nothing to be confused about. I found out Jack and I go to the same school, and have for the last three and a half years. Big deal. I have a boyfriend.”

“Who’s a complete tool,” Logan said under his breath.

Berkley’s head whipped to him. “I thought you liked Silas?”

“If by ‘like’ you mean I’dliketo punch him in the face, then yeah.”

The men of the table snickered, and Jessica crossed her arms over her chest.

Guess she wouldn’t be telling them about the double date or the Sofia drama, then.

“He smoked you in the face with a volleyballone time,” Jessica protested. “Let it go, big brother.”

“It’s not about that, and you know it.”

Jessica arched a brow. “Then what’s the problem?”

“The problem is that guy has never treated you well. He’s the definition of a fuckboy.”

“How can he be a fuckboy if we’ve been in a relationship for the last three and a half years?”

“He just…is.”

Jessica searched the eyes of everyone at the table, silently begging for backup, for someone to pipe up and say that Silas wasn’t as bad as Logan seemed to think.

No one did.
