As if sensing my jitters, Jo pulls Adri off my lap so I can stand. “Even though we already know exactly who they paired you with, I know you need to see it.”
Adri’s head pops up just enough to give me a tipsy smile. “Go kick ass for me, Cap.”
I nod my appreciation before running out of the living room. Using my shoulders, I push through the crowd of people until I make it to the foyer.
My finger runs down the sheet until I find Edwards, and I follow the arrow that connects me and my partner for the evening. Hovering over his name, my mood plummets.
Kenneth Gray.
“Oh fuck me,” I mutter. Is it possible to bethisunlucky?
“Language, Eddie.”
I jump at Kenneth’s deep voice behind me, and my heart pounds loudly in my chest. He’s way too close, even though the foyer is empty. Only we decided to check the paper on this side of the house.
After collecting myself, I whirl around and jam my finger into his chest. “You. Did you do this on purpose?”
Kenneth holds his hands up in surrender. “No, I swear I found out when you did. Cade is always in charge of the scavenger hunt so I can play, but I had a feeling he’d pull something considering how weird he has been since seeing us together. As you know, our best friend is a meddler.”
There’s nothing Cade loves more than to be in other people’s business.
At this rate, I’ll never escape Kenneth. How am I supposed to not think about him when I’m about to spend my favorite party of the year by his side?
“So… partners.” Strangely, the word doesn’t irritate me as much as it did at the beginning of the semester. “Again.”
“Looks like it. And we can’t use tonight as a point for the Brain Bowl. On my way to find you, Cade told me that we either take the night off from the game, or we’re banned from next year’s party.”
I groan at another lost point opportunity.
Then I smile. Kenneth and I paired up means only one thing.
“Since we can’t beat each other…”
The excitement in his voice matches mine. “I guess we’ve got to beat everyone else.”
