“I got you a celebratory slush earlier too, but I’m afraid Ginny used it as a grenade.”

He looked blankly at her.

“She threw it at Marshall.”

“That’s what it was.”

She couldn’t help but smile.“You were exclusively focused on the exit, weren’t you?”

Ronnie adopted a cross-legged pose.“I knew something cold hit me, but I didn’t focus on what it was or where it came from.It served as a distraction. That was the important thing.”

“Ginny,” she elaborated.“She had your best interests at heart.”Or maybe Spook’s.Perhaps a combination of the two.It didn’t really matter why she’d thrown it, only that she had.

Alle took a sip of tea and let the drink revive her.“Do you think you might be able to face going back to your van?”If they didn’t go soon, she’d have to call someone to let them know Ronnie was found.Better that than site security stumbling upon them.

Ronnie ran his teeth over his sore lip.“If you’re with me, I guess.”His voice still held a dejected note.

“I’ll hold your hand, if you like. And I’ll make sure they don’t bombard you with grievances all at once.To be fair, if anyone ought to be telling anyone off, it should be you.Chauncey let things get out of hand.Badly enough that I hope you consider giving him the boot.”

“Maybe,” he mumbled, head bowing again.

So maybe that discussion needed to wait a bit.

“Can I have some of your tea?”he asked as Allegra made to stand.

“Sure.Here.”She passed it over.“You can finish it.”
