“Shhh. Hold on. Help is on the way.” He risked taking her hand with his free one. He couldn’t just sit here and watch her suffer.

Her fingers wrapped around his, and he didn’t even flinch when her nails dug into his skin.

Chapter36

By the timethe ambulance arrived, it had to drive through a crowd of newsies. Killian trusted his staff to keep them off the property and as far from him, Dizzie, and Portia as possible.

He comforted Dizzie while they waited and whispered soothing words of encouragement. He didn’t let go of her hand until the medics exited the ambulance.

He stood and waved them over. “Over here.”

Instead, they headed toward Portia. “Dammit. I’ll be right back.” He took off across the lawn to intercept them. Leaving her like this didn’t feel right.

“We’re here for Ms. Tremaine.” They gave him a funny look and tried to go around him.

“No, over there. I called you.” Killian grabbed a medic’s arm and pulled him toward Dizzie.

The EMT resisted. “The call said Ms. Tremaine had been in an accident.”

Fuck, he hadn’t counted on them being stubborn. “Yes, she ran over someone.Thatperson needs your help.”

“She deserved it,” Portia yelled from the step. She hadn’t made any move toward the EMTs. The crash must have shaken her up more than she’d admitted.

“You.” Killian pointed to the medic who wasn’t carrying the big medical kit. “Check Portia out.”

The man nodded and dashed to her side.

Killian turned to the medic he still had a grip on. “You come over here and help her.”

The medic ignored him and looked at his partner. The other man nodded, indicating, Killian assumed, that Portia was okay. Only then did he follow Killian to Dizzie’s side.

“Car versus motorcycle,” Killian said, though the medic had probably figured that out for himself.

The EMT knelt next to Dizzie and started his assessment. “We’ve got to get her treated now . Where should we…”

“Take her to the Tremaine hospital.” When the medic started to object, Killian stopped him. “Do you know who I am?”

The EMT nodded. “I’ll take responsibility, as long as you ensure she gets the best care,” Killian said.

“Yes, sir.”

Killian rubbed his fingers over his forehead. How many people would he have to browbeat to get Dizzie the care she needed?

Dizzie noticed the beeping first.

After that, it was the flare of pain each time she took a breath.

Where was she?

Opening her eyes took effort. She’d manage to do it briefly, then her lids fluttered shut again.

When she finally kept them open, all she saw was white.

White walls. White curtains. Bright white light. Was she dead?

No, not dead, probably, but this sure wasn’t her room. She liked colors way too much. It wasn’t the Jack’s or the hacker’s. Or Killian’s.
