No way was she sticking around and waiting for whatever happened next.
Barefoot, Dizzie took a small step backward, moving closer to the door. Not sure what she would do if she got there. Not sure what Alice would do. She’d never beat Alice to the door. Taller, heavier, and highly trained, Alice could take Dizzie down in an instant.
“I can bring her in the morning.” Alice frowned at the response she received. “Sir, she’s exhausted.”
“But, sir—”Alice paled and broke off. “Mr. Tremaine’s assistant, sir?” Dizzie’s former best friend swallowed hard and nodded at whatever was said next. “Yes, sir. I’ll bring her in.”
Dizzie inched toward her boots, shoved her feet into them. If she had to run, she didn’t want to do it barefoot.
“Yes, sir. We’ll wait here for an escort.” Alice frowned and looked at Dizzie again. “I don’t think that’s necessary, sir. She’s just a courier.”
Usually, Dizzie hated that phrase.Just a courier. If those words got her out of this tonight, she’d never complain again.
Dizzie took another small step toward the door. Just in case.
“Yes, sir.” Lips pinched, Alice dropped her wrist but didn’t meet Dizzie’s gaze.
“What’s going on?” Dizzie wanted Alice to explain why she’d turned her oldest friend in.
Alice shoved her hands into her pockets. She hunched her shoulders and looked uncomfortable.
“Portia Tremaine, along with a number of high-level Tremaine Corporation investors, was at the hotel tonight.”
Dizzie nodded. She knew this part.
“They’re still digging out the rubble of the building’s top floor. The security team—and Mr. Tremaine, of course—are very eager to discover what happened. Whether it was an accident or,” Alice dragged the word out, “something else.”
“All I did was deliver a package. Talk to biz services, check the logs. I wasn’t around when the accident happened.” Alice still wouldn’t meet her eyes and the first tickles of panic colored Dizzie’s words. “Why do they need to come get me now?”
Staring at the floor, Alice said, “Someone called in a tip. Said a bomb caused the explosion.”
“A bomb?”
Alice continued as if Dizzie hadn’t spoken. “The tip said it may have been an inside job.”
Dizzie swallowed. “Inside what, the hotel?”
Alice didn’t answer.
As the silence between them grew, Dizzie finally caught on. “Me?They thinkI’mthe inside job?”
“They don’t want you. They want whoever was responsible. Tell them what you saw and you’ll be fine.” Alice spoke in a rush, the words tumbling out.
That was when Dizzie knew she was lying. Alice didn’t believe it would be fine.
“They’ll be here in a few minutes, Diz. Go with them. Don’t make a fuss. Don’t piss them off with that mouth of yours. They’re out for blood right now.”
Dizzie didn’t want to imagine how eager they were.
“I won’t forgive you for this, Alice.”
Alice swallowed hard. “I know.” Now, finally, she looked at Dizzie. “This is my job, Dizzie. I didn’t have a choice.”
Chapter6
“Outside of theminor cuts and bruising, you’re a very lucky man. However, the muscles around your implant are strained. Rest a few days, keep weight off that leg. That’s a small price, I’d say, for saving Portia Tremaine’s life.” The doctor dropped his voice, aware of the possibility of eavesdroppers.
Killian tried to smile, but it didn’t come. He’d saved Portia’s life, but he hadn’t been able to save Tommy. His remains had been pulled from the wreckage after they’d whisked Portia away to the Tremaine Corporation’s private hospital.
