The taller of the two smirked. “Still can’t let you in.”

Killian stepped sideways. They shifted to remain between him and the door.

He was considering his extremely limited options when a nurse approached.

“Can I help you?”

He gave her his most charming smile. “I’m here to see my friend. I was here earlier,” he added to be helpful. “I’m Killian St. John.” Surely he didn’t have to add who he was.

She looked him up and down, a pinched smile on her lips. “Hmm,” she murmured in a tone he didn’t know how to interpret.

Killian looked down at his clothes. For the first time since the gala he wore his usual dark slacks and jacket, with a white shirt and no tie, so it wasn’t like he looked like a slob from the street. Plus, there was the whole sexy eligible bachelor thing he’d had going on prior to meeting Dizzie. That usually got him in the door. Any door.

This was weird.

“She’s not in there.”

His stomach twisted.Dammit! He had seen her outside.

He looked at the guards to gauge their reaction. Given the shit-eating grins they wore, they’d obviously known. Assholes.

He turned his charm on full blast. “Where can I find her?”

The nurse frowned, suddenly looking nervous. “Oh, she’s gotta be around here somewhere. She insisted on a walk around the floor, though the poor thing looked about to pass out at any moment.”

“How long has she been gone?” Killian had a bad feeling about this.

The nurse looked past him at the clock. Her face reflected surprise. “Why, almost an hour. I hope she hasn’t had an accident.”

His fists clenched. He’d known the hospital was a risk. He should never have left her alone. Had Tremaine Security taken her or had Dizzie slipped away?

How could they not know where she was?

A tiny voice in his head whispered that he knew where Dizzie was. She was heading somewhere in Portia’s car. There had to be a way to track her.

“Well, there is a way to find out where she is,” the nurse said slowly.

He’d apparently said that aloud.

“There is? Can you do that?”

She looked uncertain for a minute.

“What if she had a medical emergency?” he added, in case the nurse was wavering.

“We can check.” With a decisive nod, the nurse headed for the central desk.

Leaving the smirking guards behind, Killian followed her.

“Well, that’s strange,” she said, studying the screen.

“What is?” His breath caught in his throat. He scooted around her until he could see the screen too. The charts and lines didn’t mean a thing to him.

Ignoring him, she waved another nurse over. “You reading this the way I am?”

His view was blocked again when the other nurse rolled her chair over. “That is strange. Sure it’s the right patient?”

“Yeah, I checked that first. Think it’s a malfunction?”
