Sirens blasted in the room, followed by an announcement.

“All personnel report to your stations. Intruders have compromised the compound. I repeat. Intruders have compromised the compound.”

Well, fuck me sideways.

SAM

Webb and Tripp barked orders left and right.

Rebekah’s golden-yellow eyes glowed amber as her wolf rose to the surface. “It’s best if we shift. We’re faster that way. My team and I will split up and scour the woods and along each side of the naval base. We’ll have it locked down in no time.”

My battle station was the roof, but I was worried about Layla. With the sirens blaring, she was probably freaking out and thinking the mob was coming for her. Or she might think the intruder was her sister.

I called her, but she wasn’t answering.

My phone buzzed with a text. It took me a beat to register the 911.

Dad:911.Five guardians left Boston five minutes ago. Get out now! Lie low, and I’ll be in touch. Still working on my plan that didn’t go over well. If you’re captured, I might be able to break you out, but let’s not take that chance.

For fucking sure.

Webb hurried over. “Did you get the 911? Your father alerted me just in case you missed it.”

The pandemonium was making me dizzy and nauseous. What was up? Or what was down? The lines between the two were blurring. I hadn’t even found a place to lie low. But I couldn’t leave without saying goodbye to Layla.

I stood frozen for a beat.

Come on, asshole. Get your ass in gear.

Webb got in my face. “Sam.”

His hot breath snapped me out of my haze, and I ran as if my ass were on fire. In a roundabout way, it was. It pissed me the fuck off that the universe was crashing down around me and I couldn’t do a fucking thing about it.

I blew by a giant man in the hallway who was coming out of the restroom. It didn’t crystallize who he was until I reached the stairwell.

“Whoa!” Dane Gray yelled at my back. “What’s with the sirens? Are we under attack?”

Ignoring the alpha shifter, I shoved open the door, flying up the stairs at vampire speed. I plowed into the infirmary and checked Jack’s room. Layla had been with her uncle when I left for the meeting. No sign of my wife, but Jack was out cold with an IV in his arm.

If she wasn’t here, then I figured she had to be in nursery—until I remembered Carly had been brought in. Layla had been dying to talk to Carly.

Doc came out of the next room with blood vials in his hands and reared back. “Slow down, Sam. Are we under attack?”

“Seems so.” I didn’t have time to explain. “Where’s Layla?”

“She’s in the nursery.” We were under siege, and it didn’t faze Doc one bit. Not surprising. Doctors and medics had to stay calm and focused when attending to patients during battles.

I quickly glanced at a comatose Carly, full of questions that didn’t matter at that moment.

I was almost flying through doors and down halls, and as soon as I entered the birthing suites, the sirens stopped.

Thank fuck.

Hawk snapped to attention outside the nursery as I approached. “Is Layla in jeopardy? Do I need to rush her and your kids somewhere?” His green eyes turned a fathomless black.

“Not yet. But I don’t want you to leave this spot. Do you hear me?” My tone was harsh and commanding.
