She flushed. “Sam?”
The ladies snickered.
“It’s not what you think,” I said, though the blindfold was giving me some dick-hardening ideas. “Would you humor me?” I held out the silky material.
Layla eyed the ladies. “Should I ask you three what you did?”
“Sis, go with the flow,” Jordyn said, giddy.
I stood behind Layla and tied the silky fabric around her eyes, then blew in her ear.
She shivered. “Sam,” she warned.
I closed my hand over hers and guided her down the hall and into the nursery. The ladies were right on my heels.
I placed her in the middle of the room and stepped away to allow her space to see the transformation.
“Okay, you can take off the blindfold,” I said.
Layla lifted it off and gasped before turning around, taking in every detail.
Jo wasn’t lying about her detail-oriented skills. The room was done to perfection right down to the stuffed animals sitting in each of the four cribs.
Layla slapped a hand over her mouth and cried, “It’s fucking beautiful.” She blinked away tears. “You three did all this?”
Jordyn padded across the room. “With your help, of course, sis. You told Sam what you were interested in and what you liked, then he fed us the information. Plus, I knew you liked elephants.”
I’d learned that tidbit about Layla in Maine. She’d also given me her ideas for a nursery—colors, furniture, and theme. Then she surfed the net and picked out everything. From there, it was easy.
Layla lowered her gaze to the elephant rug between the cribs—two of which lined one wall, the other two the opposite wall.
I thought nothing could be better than the amazing time with her in Maine. How wrong I was. Seeing that smile she wore now and feeling the tension fall off her made me even happier. She’d been nervous that we wouldn’t have enough time to set up the babies’ room. I hoped that whatever was bothering her before we came to the base was now history.
The ladies chatted with Layla for a minute, then took their leave.
Once we were finally alone, I wrapped her in my arms. “Welcome home, baby doll. Now we have one less thing on our plate.”
She playfully pinched my nipple through my button-down shirt. “You’re a sneaky bastard.”
“You love this sneaky bastard.”
“Maybe.” Her flirty attitude was turning me the fuck on as she touched her stomach. “They’re going to love this room.” She glanced down. “Aren’t you?”
I replaced her hand with mine. “They are. I can’t wait to hold them while I rock them to sleep. Or see them light up with a smile as beautiful as yours.” I nuzzled my nose into her neck. “I never want you to stop smiling, Layla. I will do whatever it takes to make sure that light in you stays lit.”
She quivered against me as the love floating off her wrapped around us. “I love you, vampire.” Then she sighed as she absorbed everything in the room.
In addition to the elephant rug and cribs, the nursery had two rockers by the window, changing tables, a dresser, and a stack of wrapped presents in front of the closet.
Layla kept shaking her head. “I love the gray walls, the hint of blues and pinks in the curtains, and the gray-and-black elephant rug. What an awesome surprise, Sam. I’ll need to find a way to thank them—and you, of course.”
I picked up an elephant from one of the cribs. “No need to thank me. I will do anything for you, Layla.”
She threw herself at me. “How did I get so lucky?” She pressed a finger to my mouth. “Don’t say it.”
I captured her finger between my teeth. “Don’t say that I know another way you can get lucky?” I sucked on her finger.
Lust swirled around her as she did an eye roll. “Seriously, you’re spoiling me.”
