I smirked. “Something like that.”

“I love it here, Sam. I don’t want to leave. It’s quiet. No distractions. No problems. No one trying to kill us or kidnap us.”

Man, I wished with all I had that I could give her what she desired. Unfortunately, I had to burst her bubble. “I promise one day, you’ll have all this and more.”

“How do you know that?” she asked in a sleepy voice.

I kissed her nose. “Because I’m your personal genie who makes wishes come true.”

She laughed. “No offense, vampire, but your magical abilities can’t grant wishes.”

“Well, if you rub my belly, the genie will in fact grant you a wish.”

She snorted before dropping into a fit of giggles. “You mean your dick?” She rolled her eyes, which sparkled in the dawn’s early light.

I lifted a shoulder. “That’s the only genie you’ll ever need.”

She laughed so hard she cried, and it was fan-fucking-tastic to see her so happy, even if just for a brief moment. “Want a blow job right here on the beach?”

I smirked. “Fuck. Do you have to ask me?”

She circled her arms around my waist then rubbed my ass before she dragged her hands over the sides of my thighs. When she did, her gaze shot to mine as her hands felt along the pockets of my swim trunks. “Do you have my phone?” Her face twisted. “Because I can’t find it, by the way.”

Busted.“About that.”

I swore steam came out of her nose. “Sam Mason, what are you doing with my phone?” She stuck her hands on her hips, pursing her lips and narrowing her eyes.

“You’re beautiful even when you’re angry.”

“Shut up and answer me!” she shouted, clenching her fist.

I raised my hands, backing away. “Chill. You’re getting really worked up for nothing. I can explain.”

“My aunt and uncle stole my phone. I never expected you to do something like this. Have you ever heard of trust, vampire?”

To lie or not to lie.

“I’m waiting,” she said. “And if you don’t answer me in one second, I’m going to kick you in the balls and punch you in the nose.”

Nose I could handle. Balls not so much. “When you calm down, I’ll be more than happy to explain.” I stormed up to the house, feeling more irritated with myself than with her.

She ran at my heels. “I am not going to calm down. I hate when people take things that don’t belong to them.”

I set her cell on the island then stuck my head in the fridge. I needed another round of blood. I almost snagged a beer instead. The quiet morning was turning into an explosive one, and not in the way I would have liked.

She checked her phone. She didn’t have any messages. If she did, her screen would have shown it. Her nostrils flared. “Are you going to talk or overdose on blood?”

I growled, trying to control my rising anger at myself. I understood why she was furious. I understood that trust was the thread that held relationships together. And I wasn’t one to trust easily.

She slapped a hand on the island. When she did, the lamp in the living room crashed to the floor.

She jumped a mile as she eyed the broken pieces of ceramic.

My eyebrows disappeared into my hairline.

She regarded me with equal parts fury and confusion. “Are you using your elemental powers?”

“Sunshine, if I was using them, this house would be a pile of rubble.”
