“How did they capture Sam? Do we know?” Webb asked calmly.

“Not sure.”

“I suspect Rianne used that drug that killed the shifter,” Webb said. “We learned from Wyman that he got his supply from your father before he died.”

I captured a nail between my teeth, not concerned about where the drug had come from. “We need to act fast. I’m going in.”

“Like hell you are.” Webb’s deep voice echoed over the rain coming down in sheets.

“Are your uncles involved?”

I wanted to argue with him, but again, we didn’t have time. “I want to say no. As much as Jack despises vampires, there’s a reason he hasn’t gone after the Masons. On the other hand, Sam and Jack had a tense encounter earlier today. Jack had been ready to set Sam on fire.”

Conrad’s hazel eyes widened. “So what do we do?”

Webb sighed heavily. “Conrad, where are you?”

“We’re not far from the Aberdeen ranch,” he said.

“Send me Jack Aberdeen’s number,” Webb commanded.

Conrad obeyed while Webb was still on the phone.

“I don’t want either of you to engage until I talk to Jack,” Webb said. “Is that clear?”

Conrad acknowledged Webb with a firm yes as I stared out at the windshield. I couldn’t see much past the rain.

“Layla, are we understood?” Webb’s scary tone wasn’t frightening me.

I didn’t work for Webb, nor was I one of his soldiers. “I can’t stay put. Jordyn is in trouble too.”

“May I remind you that Abbey predicts Rianne will kill you?” Webb asked.

Conrad reared back. “No shit.”

I clasped my hands together as though praying, and I should have been. “And all of you said Abbey’s visions were off.”

“That may be so, but do you want to test that theory?” Webb asked in a calmer tone.

I stretched my neck, hoping to relieve some tension. “Rianne won’t harm me.” I didn’t sound confident at all. Rianne’s tone on the phone had given me the chills, but she’d also made me furious. I had no idea what she would do to me. Noah was the one we had to tread lightly around, though.

Webb groaned out his frustration. “Maybe not, but accidents do happen. Abbey never said Rianne would kill you intentionally.”

Damn vampire had a point. “Webb, I have to try to reason with Rianne. I can’t sit here and do nothing. Call Jack. Conrad and I will scope out the scene, and Conrad will report back to you.” I was done talking. Besides, Webb and his team couldn’t get there in time. So we had to do something. I wasn’t about to put my faith in my uncle, no matter how much I believed he didn’t want to piss off the Masons.

Webb half laughed. “Conrad, make sure no one dies. I’ll be in touch.” Webb’s name vanished from the screen.

Conrad dumped his phone in the inside pocket of his coat. “Are you sure you want to do this?”

“One hundred percent.” I had to knock some sense into Rianne, make sure Jordyn was okay, and above all else, save Sam.

We hadn’t known each other that long or expressed our endless love for one another, but he couldn’t die. I believed if he did, I would too. The mind-blowing idea that he and I were connected sounded absurd, but I felt it down to my toes. The gorgeous vampire and I were linked. I couldn’t explain it. Didn’t want to try to understand it either, but something was pushing me to save him.

“Here’s the plan,” Conrad said. “I’m going to circle the perimeter of the property. I want you to go in slowly. I don’t know your sister or what she's capable of, but I want you to go in with eyes and ears open. Don’t for one second let your guard down because you see Jordyn or Sam in a compromised position. Talk to Rianne or something to distract her. If we are only up against Rianne and your cousin, I should be able to stop them. If there are more people than we expect, I’ll figure something out. I do have a buddy who’s local, but he doesn’t like to deal with your family.”

I didn’t either.

Conrad bent over slightly and fished under his seat before producing a black canvas pouch that held four daggers. He handed me one that was in a leather sheath. “Not sure if this will be enough or not.”
