I poured two cups of coffee then snatched the bottle of whiskey from the counter next to the fridge and added a shot to my cup. The first sip always burned, but man, it was a welcome relief as my nerves settled a smidge.
I took another swig for good measure then headed upstairs. Jordyn lounged against the headboard as Rianne lay sleeping like she was one of the undead. If her chest weren’t rising and falling, I would swear she was dead.
The blue carpet muffled my footsteps as I ambled in. I was about to set one cup down on the glass nightstand when Jordyn opened her eyes.
“I smell something wonderful,” she said, taking a cup from me. “Did you put whiskey in mine?”
She knew me too well. “I didn’t.”
Bringing the mug to her mouth, she inhaled the pungent aroma. “You make strong coffee, so I shouldn’t need the added jolt.”
I sank down on the edge of the mattress, cradled my cup in my hands, and glanced at the poster of Tom Cruise inTop Gun. Rianne carried that damn poster with her wherever she went. Not because of Tom Cruise; she loved the movie.
Jordyn sipped her coffee. “We need to contact Sam.”
“I know,” I said low. “You don’t want to call the uncles, though?”
She shook her head. “I thought a lot about it. They’ve all but disowned us since Dad died. And I don’t care to hear Uncle Jack berate us.”
Uncle Jack was the ass of assholes.
“Damn it, Layla. This was supposed to be the easiest job ever. Shoot a few darts and take a vampire hostage.”
I laughed, expelling some nervous energy. “Dad would be laughing, too, if he heard you say that. But Sam isn’t an ordinary vampire. I doubt the drug would’ve had any effect on him.”
She pulled in a deep breath and smiled. “I miss Dad so much.”
I rubbed her denim-clad leg. “I do too.”
She blinked away a tear. “Roman is going to be a problem. I still don’t understand why that drug didn’t knock him out.”
Again, my eyes were drawn back to Tom Cruise. Rianne loved that movie, but she also loved fighter jets. Her dream had been to fly jets one day for the military. “We can’t worry about him right now. We need to help Rianne.”
“What about our benefactor?” She glanced at me with tired brown eyes over the rim of her cup.
“We’ll deal with him later. Besides, if I can get close to Sam, then maybe I can finish the job.”
“Sam is into you.”
I snorted, almost spitting out my coffee. “He wants to kill me. Nothing more.”
Jordyn scoffed. “He wants to fuck you then maybe kill you.”
“I would go for the former. I did grab his dick, by the way.”
Her eyes bugged out. “And?”
I sighed. “Huge. Hard.”
“He was hard?” She shivered. “Our family would shit their pants if they knew our fantasies.”
As teenagers, the three of us had wondered what it would be like to date a vampire, but none of us had gone down that road. Every time we’d returned from a hunt, that fantasy had become a nightmare. As handsome as some of them had been, they were evil, pure and simple.
“I won’t be slipping in between the sheets with Sam, although if that’s what it takes to get Rianne out of her comatose state, I’ll screw him in a heartbeat.”
“He’ll help without you having to strip naked.”
My eyebrows hiked up to my hairline. “Oh? Do you have psychic abilities now?”
