He handed the leash to Kamila anyway. “Well, you can have visitation, then.”
“Careful. I’ll be over to visit him a lot. In person, too. No FaceTime calls.”
He smiled as he touched her cheek. “Then I’m definitely keeping the dog.” He kissed her again. In the rain, while she was in a sari and a small puppy wearing a bow tie was trying to drink the water falling from the sky.
It was the most perfect moment of Kamila’s life.
Chapter 28
There were a fair number of suspicious looks and smirks when Kamila, Rohan, and Potato finally made it back to the puppy prom soaking wet and grinning ear to ear, but Kamila put off any speculation and gossip and happily went to the bathroom to change into the jeans and sweatshirt she’d thankfully brought to clean up in. A few minutes later, while maneuvering the adoption dogs into carriers, Kamila cornered Maricel.
“I heard you were with Kevin last night.”
Maricel’s eyes widened as she blushed and stammered. “I was going to tell you…I mean…I wasn’t hiding but…I wasn’t sure you’d approve.”
“Nonsense. I’m very happy for you, Maricel.”
Maricel grinned. “I really, really like him. He likes me, too, for real.”
“Of course he does. You’reyou.”
Asha gave Kamila a knowing smile from across the room while Kamila was putting Darcy’s leash on. Kamila grinned back, knowing her friend would understand. She expected Asha would call her as soon as they were all out of this church to get a play-by-play of what happened when she and Rohan chased Potato out the door.
After they were done cleaning, Rohan walked Kamila out to her car. They decided not to have dinner together, or even meet up later that night. Kamila was exhausted, and she desperately needed to go home and shower. Rohan said the same. They agreed they had all the time in the world, and kissed goodbye. But of course, Kamila regretted the decision the second her hair was dry and safely tucked into her sleeping bonnet.
What if he changed his mind about her? Also, what if she misinterpreted what he wanted for their future? Maybe none of it was real and that soggy gazebo was some magical portal place where Kamila could have everything she wanted, but then it disappeared once she was dry.
She should call him. She picked up her phone just as a video call flashed on her screen. Of course, it was Rohan—she didn’t know why she doubted him.
She answered with a big smile. “Hey, old man.”
He was clearly already in bed—he wasn’t kidding about being tired. She wanted to be in that bed with him. He raised a brow. “You’re still going to call me old man?”
Holding the phone in front of her, she climbed into her bed. “I wouldn’t have agreed to this whole being-in-love thing if I thought it would change things between us. Didn’t I tell you that I wanted to keep my best friend?”
He grinned. “I’m actually hoping thingswillchange between us.”
She was intrigued. She pulled her duvet cover over her. “Really? Elaborate. How would you like things to change between us?”
His eyes narrowed as he settled against his headboard. “Well, we’ve already had conversations in bed at night, but hear me out…What if we were in the same bed?”
“So, you’re hoping we’ll share a bed again?”
“I’m counting on it. I’m hoping you’ll fall asleep in my arms often.”
“Just sleep?”
He chuckled that low, rumbling laugh that went straight to her core. She was very much hoping for a lot more than just sleep, too. A sudden thought snapped her out of her arousal, though. She sat up straight. “Rohan, do you think it will be weird?”
“What will be weird?”
“You know. You and me. Sex.”
“I can’t believe you just asked me that.”
“Um, have you met me? You do remember I’ve never been shy or demure when it comes to conversations about sex, right? I used to give you details about my hookups all the time. Oh wait.” She cringed. “I probably shouldn’t have done that. You were pining for me and I was telling you my favorite positions.”
“I wasn’t pining.”
