“Asha, who is pregnant?”

“Jana Suleiman.”

Kamila’s hand shot to her mouth. Jana was pregnant! That’s why she’d been so cranky and irritable!

Kamila said the first thought that came to her mind. “That is going to be one gorgeous baby.” Then a second realization hit her. “She left her fancy job in Central Asia because she was knocked up? This is Anil’s friend’s baby, right? Her boss at the aid agency. That’s why she left.”

“Actually”—Nicole looked at Asha—“Ididknow she was pregnant, but I didn’t know who the father was until today. Like I said, not my patient, not my business. But the father was with her at the clinic this afternoon for their four-month scan. It’s not her old boss—it’s someone we all also know well. Someone you have spent a lot of time with lately…”

Kamila blinked, in shock.Rohan.

Impossible. It couldn’t be him. This couldn’t be happening. Then again, she’d learned, tonight actually, that Rohan Nasser wasn’t who she thought he was. He was more than willing to keep things from Kamila.

He’d been so protective of Jana lately. Mysterious chats. Spending time with her. Dinners. He knew things only Jana could have told him. Jana had been in his apartment—somewhere even Kamila had never even been.

Would Rohan kiss Kamila when he knew Jana was pregnant with his child? Earlier today she wouldn’t have thought he was capable of that. But the last hour had given her a proper education on the limits of men’s terribleness.

Kamila felt like throwing up. “No…” she whispered.

Asha cringed. “I’m sorry. I’m not sure what’s been going on between you two since—”

“I…think I’m going to be sick,” Kamila said. “Rohan and Jana are having a child.”

Asha recoiled. “What? Did I say Rohan? Wasn’t he at your house for dinner? How could he be at the clinic at the same time?”

Kamila frowned. Right. “My brain hadn’t gone that far yet.” It wasn’t Rohan. She exhaled, relief washing over her. She was still incredibly angry with him, and she had no intention of being friends with him anymore. But she wouldn’t have been able to deal with him having a child with Jana. That would have been too much. “So, whoisthe father?”

“Anil,” Nicole said. “Anil Malek is the father.”

Kamila’s jaw dropped. That was…monumentally unexpected. “Anil? Are you serious?”

Asha nodded. “I’m sorry, Kamila. I mean, I know things have been weird for you lately, and maybe you thought you and Anil could have something after that whole mess with Rohan.”

Of course. Kamila wasn’t really into Anil…but how would anyone know that? Especially since she’d been flirting with the man so much at Bollywood nights.

Kamila felt like a fool. Anil had flirted back. Was he playing her?

“This sucks,” Kamila said, lifting the puppy back up. Potato promptly starting eating the tissue in her lap.

“I’m so sorry,” Asha said.

That snapped Kamila out of it. “Asha, no. Don’t worry—I’m not, like, heartbroken or anything over Anil. I’m not interested in him like that.” She frowned. “Did you think I was talking about him when I got here? I’ve only known Anil for a few weeks.”

“I thought there was a chance, and…So there is nothing going on between you two?”

Kamila shook her head. “I was flattered by his attention, and maybe I was subconsciously trying to make Rohan jealous…”Whoa—make Rohan jealous? Where did that come from…? Kamila put it aside to examine later and got back to this bombshell. “I shouldn’t have flirted with him so much in front of everyone. Him, too. I could tell that Anil never wanted more, and neither did I. But we are…werefriends. Also, holy carrot cake, Anil and Jana aretogether? Likesecretly having a baby togethertogether?”

Nicole shook her head. “No, I don’t think they are. I don’t actually think they’re on great terms. We’ll have to wait for details if we want more information on how this all happened.”

Asha turned to her wife, smirking. “Nicole, I know you’ve never been with a man, but as an obstetrician, you should know this. When a man and a woman really like each other, they have this special kind of hug—”

Nicole threw a pillow at her wife.

“Anil is married,” Kamila remembered, trying to work through timelines. “It’s only been a few months since he separated.”

Asha cringed. “I don’t want to speculate or gossip, but I’d bet there was overlap.”

“You literally just speculated and gossiped, Asha,” Nicole said.
