CHAPTER 17Lyric
LIP OF THE DAY:
Vintage Queen
The last week of school before winter break goes by in a blur, and before I know it, Kiana and I are crowded in my and Grammy’s apartment getting all dolled up for Winter Formal.
“OK, how’s that?” Kiana says, motioning for me to turn around and look in my vanity mirror at my hair. Once again, Kiana has proven just how talented she is by styling my braids into a soft updo, fake white flowers sprinkled down one side like Billie Holiday.
“Oh, you cooked! You really did,” I say, picking up a handheld mirror to look at the back of my head. “And you snatched my edges! This hair isnot gonna moveall night.”
“Well, I should hope not. Because we will be dancing,” Kiana says.
“How did you get so good at hair, and you don’t have barely any on that beautiful head of yours!”
Kiana laughs and gives me a light swat as she begins to take her dress out of a tall garment bag hanging on one of my privacy screens.
“Gurl, you know I got my hair silk pressed all through elementary and middle school. Didn’t get the guts to cut it all off until right before we met. I hadyearsof practice on myself and my Barbie dolls.”
I watch as Kiana pulls out a ruby-red, one-shoulder, fitted maxi dress. It’s simple but elegant and is going to look amazing on her.
“Woooooow.” I whistle as she starts to shimmy into it. “Holden is for sure going to propose to you when he sees you in that.”
“Stop playin’.” Kiana laughs. “You know it’s not like that with Holden. We’ve been friends forever. I don’t even think he thinks of me that way.”
“I’m telling you again because I love you, Ki,” I say, standing to help her zip up the back of her dress. “That boy doesn’t want to be your friend.”
