“Once.” Jacob noted.

“Once is fine.” Joe smiled. “I’m excited to have you.”

“I’m excited to be had.”

“Speaking of-” Joe said as he put down his coffee and climbed across

the table.

That morning Jacob may not have been a christian, but he definitely

spent a lot of time on his knees.

Ristretto.

Somehow he started to get ready for work with three hours to spare, and still arrived late.

He wasn’t late by a lot, but late enough that Serena gave a smirk when he came in.

“Sorry.” Jacob squeaked.

“It’s all good. Your hair is a mess.”

“Really?” Jacob looked at his reflection in the espresso machine.

“No. No more than usual really.” She chuckled.

“Sheesh. I pay good money for this hair.”

“Get a refund.” She smirked.

“Where’s Garret?” Jacob asked.

“He’s organizing the receipts.”

“But isn’t that entire desk back there full of his receipts? I thought that was where his paperwork went to die!” Jacob was aghast.

“Yeah. He has been on quite a tear the past few days. It’s almost like he can’t stop working. I don’t even know if he went home last night.”

“I always just think he stays here. Goes upstairs, hangs from the rafters, that sort of thing. It’s actually amazing we see him at all throughout the day. His type normally comes out at night to feast on the blood of the innocents.”

“So no one here then,” she chuckled. “You think his wife is mad at him or something?”

“He has a wife?” Jacob looked at her surprised. “Really?”

“‘Had’ I think is more like it. It makes sense. He’s here all the time. He’s busy and not really paying attention to anything except his work. He goes from not giving a second thought about this place to suddenly never wanting to stop working or leave? I think he’s been kicked out.” She plotted.

“Maybe he just got really excited to have a business that he loves?” Jacob shrugged. Even he was having a hard time believing that particular lie.

“Whatever it is, I’ve never seen him work so hard. He’s gone a little mental.” she whispered.

“I’m sure he’s fine.” Jacob responded.

As they said this, Garret finally stepped out of the back carrying a sign. It read ‘no more musical numbers.’ He walked by Jacob, went straight to the wall and hammered it in for the world to see.

“That’s an oddly specific sign there Garret.” Jacob noted.
