it. For a room full of undoubtedly nerdy people, the audience was actually

surprisingly nice, accepting and well bathed. That was a miracle in and of

itself.

Some of them asked Joe about his new friend, but most simplywere

there to enjoy the movie. Clearly he had been here many times before, and

he seemed to get a kick out of showing off Jacob. It felt nice to be admired,

and the men accepted him pretty easily.

“They’re nicer than I expected.” Jacob chuckled.

“Of course they’re nice. They’re Trekkies. It’s live long and prosper, not

get bent and die.” Joe laughed.

“I guess it is.” Jacob smiled.

“Aren’t your friends nice?” Joe asked.

“I mean…Sort of? In their own way. They’re…a curious bunch.” “Well, I hope to meet more of them soon. Serena seems nice.” “I can confirm she is sometimes.” Jacob smiled as he looked at the

screen. “So…what is it about?”

“Star Trek?” Joe asked. “You’ve never seen a Star Trek movie before?” “I mean, of course I have. They have the…hand thing?” Jacob said,

lifting his hand in a strange wave.

“That’s definitely something that they have…” Joe looked at him

strangely for a minute. “But that’s the queens wave. This is the Star Trek

salute.”

“What? What is it?” Jacob asked, trying to mimic the salute but was

suddenly feeling very self conscious.

“You’ve never seen this before?” Joe looked at him strangely. “No?”

“The TV shows? You must’ve seen Voyager, Deep Space Nine or The

Next Generation?”

“No?” Jacob responded.

“None of it?” Joe was shocked.

“I’m sorry, is that bad?” Jacob asked, his insides squirming as Joe

looked at him. The look wasn’t judgement but it was absolutely baffled. “No. I just-” Joe began but stopped. For a moment Jacob was worried

this was it. He was about to be dumped for not being enough of a nerd. The

irony was cruel. But then Joe’s face shifted to one of incredible excitement.
