—Moore You Want

“I spent the day dealing with insulting questionsfrom your husband.” Brendan spits the word as it tastes foul in his mouth.

It likely does as it churns up bile in my own. “Oh?”

He whirls me around and the spoon I’m holding to scoop out our Lebanese takeout falls to the floor. “That’s all you have to say? Oh?”

I take in his granite jaw, narrowed eyes, and immaculate suit. Then I turn away before he can witness how badly his words have shaken me. “Well, there’s no blood on you.”

“He asked about you.”

I stumble backward until the counter braces me. “Why? What did we give away that he would ask you...”

Brendan bares his teeth in a facsimile of a smile. “He’s murderously jealous.”

I scoff. “Like hell.”

My brother scans my face with wonder. “You don’t believe me.”

My eyes burn but I refuse to let a single tear fall. “Why would I believe he’s pining for me when he has Liza Hina in his bed?”

Brendan’s eyes harden at my cold reminder. “I should have hit him.”

I twist around so I can grab another spoon. “I’m not worth the effort.”

“Yes, you are.” His arm slips around my waist and he presses his lips to the top of my head.

My head bows in defeat. “I can’t talk about this, B.”

“Fair enough. Let’s talk about how I plan to have Celia hang fish from Dani’s favorite Emily Freeman?”

I gasp in horror. “Why would you do such a wretched thing?”

He wags a finger at me. “Be grateful you don’t own one. I’ll figure out how to take my revenge on you too, Aunt Sula.”

A giggle bursts through my agony. “You figured out it was Max.”

His eyes narrow. “And my wife and sister conspired against me.”

“I wouldn’t say conspire—”

“What would you call it?”

“Protecting my favorite nephew.”

His sigh is long. “Do you know how much time it took to get clean?”

“It could have been worse,” I remind him.

“How?”

“It could have been a Sharpie.”

“Good god, don’t give him any ideas.”
