I begin to deep breathe, just like they taught us in Lamaze class. Once I realize there’s not another contraction imminent, I reach up and cup David’s chin. I tug him slightly, and he presses his forehead against mine. “Don’t worry. If he’s anything like his father, he’s going to be perfect.”

David seizes my lips in a fierce kiss. “That’s after his mother shows him the most important thing.”

“What’s that?”

“How to love.”

Later that night, I realize I didn’t manage to seduce my husband in the now wrinkled suit I married him in. But looking down at the bundle wrapped up in my arms, I realized it’s a certainty I’ll never be able to resist him wearing it.

Ever.

Because he’s now worn it to the two most special events of our lives: our marriage and the birth of our son. In other words, if I have my way, he’s never getting rid of it.

I lean down and whisper into my son’s ear, “I have a secret to tell you.”

David grins. “Sharing secrets with our son already?” He hitches a hip on the side of my bed and presses a kiss first to the top of my head, then to our son’s.

I nod before continuing. “The secret is this: love is worth everything, Benjamin Burke Lennan. Everything. And no amount of money, prestige, or fame will ever replace that.”

“Listen to your mother,” David chokes out.

I tip my head back, and my lips curve. “Practicing that for when he’s older?”

David doesn’t answer. Instead, he takes my lips in a kiss that’s more than a thank-you, more than an I love you. It’s exactly one thing.

Perfect.
