“She was my wife, and you knew better. You know better now. Stop before innocent people get hurt.”

All the time Alias and Grace argued we were being moved toward what I assumed was the exit.

Grace focused back on me, and seconds later I blacked out.

Chapter thirty-eight

Kaden

Icausedtremoraftertremor to rocket through the facility. The back of the building was already collapsing when I finally got Lysander and whoever he was protecting out. Unfortunately, as Lysander flew up and out the doors I had melted when this all started, I could tell he was unconscious.

Bisbee came out seconds later. “He’ll die, Kaden. If I don’t lift the meld, he’ll die. Start obeying my orders now if you want to save him.”

A voice came from the microphone Dr. Fagan had put in my ear before moving back to a safe distance. “Listen to her, son. This is when you have to use your wits. Lysander’s life depends on it.”

Several men came out of the facility behind Bisbee and surrounded me. I could tell by their expressions Dr. Bisbee was controlling them.

“What do you want?” I asked, hoping to figure out how to proceed if I could get her to talk.

Surely by now, yourinstructors,” she said the last word like it tasted bad in her mouth, “...have told you what this is about. I simply need you to help me expose the world to the same elements that created these powers.”

“And what happens to those who can’t handle it? They should just die?”

“Please, what does someone who can snap his fingers and end the Earth as we know it care if a few ants die under his feet? You’re a god, Kaden. Start acting like it.”

The man who was still tied up next to Lysander spoke. “None of us are gods, Grace. And killing millions of people won’t create more Supes. You know the science, this is evolution, not magic. Why do you keep denying that?”

Bisbee ignored him. “So what will it be, Kaden? You can destroy me, but you’ll destroy Lysander as well. You can’t have both,” she teased.

My studies returned to me just then, and I remembered the lessons about polarities. Dr. Bisbee’s powers were increased because her polarity was here. She wanted to destroy my polarity. Maybe that was the angle. Maybe that was how I could manage this.

I didn’t dare remove Lysander for fear her weird mind-melding would harm him if she lost control of him. But, if her polarity was gone…

I didn’t think. I used my power to place Lysander on the ground, grabbed the man I assumed was her polarity, and took him miles away to where Elana, Dr. Fagan, and Dr. Aynesworth were.

Bisbee screamed and fell to the ground. Immediately, the men who’d followed her out of the facility began to regain consciousness.

“Point your guns at her now!” I demanded.

Echoes of the destruction of the facility behind her sounded around us. “You’ve signed your lover’s death warrant!” she screamed and ran back into the collapsing building.

I didn’t wait. I threw up a bubble around her stopping her where she stood, and brought her back out.

“Wake him up!” I demanded when she stood before me. “Wake him up, or you will endure a long and very painful death.”

The men turned their guns on me then, and I shrugged. “You can’t kill me with bullets, gentlemen, but you can seriously piss me off. I suggest you leave now!”

“There you are,” Bisbee purred. “You aren’t a superhero, you’re as much a villain as I am. Let’s stop this nonsense. Join me. Let’s turn this planet into what it’s supposed to be, a Supe’s paradise.”

I sent electricity through the bubble. Not enough to kill or make her pass out, but enough to cause pain.

Once again, she screamed. “Let him go!” I demanded again.

She laughed, and this time I filled the bubble with carbon dioxide. She began coughing and choking. I took it to the point where she almost passed out, then cleared the air, letting oxygen flow back in. Before she could recover, I heated the bubble to the point where it wouldn’t kill or incinerate her like I wanted, but would cause her significant pain.

Bisbee screamed, but I no longer cared. I was once again that boy inside the house with the evil men. They needed to die. She needed to die.

“Kaden, Kaden, stop!”
