“Then protect him. Kaden, you’re the most powerful Supe on the planet. I don’t think a person can be safer than under your protection.”

I snort-chuckled at that. “I don’t know what the hell I’m doing. How can I protect him?”

Dr. Fagan came over and mussed my hair, like I was a little kid, and said, “You just do it. Now, come on back. The group are worried we overdid it, and I’m starving. The locals have put on a pig roast for us, and it’ll be done soon. We don’t want to offend our hosts now, do we?” he asked, and handed me a pack of tissues from his pocket.

I took out several and attempted to clean myself up. “No, we don’t want to offend the locals. I’ll call Lysander first, though. I want him to know what we’re asking of him. And, Dr. Fagan, if he says no, everyone has to be okay with it, okay?”

“Of course, Kaden. No one should force anyone to put their lives in danger. That needs to be each individual’s choice.”

When I finally called Lysander, I told him everything that had happened that day. I told him I was basically a doomsday bomb that could go off at any moment, then waited for him to tell me to get lost. When he told me he cared about me, and that if I wanted to blow the world up, that wouldn’t stop his feelings, I laughed. “You’re a freaking nut.”

“Yeah, but you like me.”

“I do like you, Lysander. I like you maybe too much.”

“Nah, it can never be too much,” he said.

“So, they want me to ask you to come out and join us at the experiment site. But before you say yes, it’s dangerous, Lysander. You’re my polarity. We’ve pretty much proven that now, so if you’re around me, my powers are immense and, well, they even think I might blow up an island.”

“Okay, when do I come? We can blow it up together, if that's what it takes."

“Wait, you should think about it, Lysander. It’s really dangerous, and I don’t know if I can keep you safe.”

‘I’ll keep myself safe, Kaden, and it’s no more dangerous for me than it is for you. Of course, I wanna come. Hell, I wanted to go with you every time you left to work on your stuff. You forget you’re my polarity too. I feel as empty as you do when you leave.”

I sighed deeply. “Okay, I’ll let them know. Then, when you get here, we’ll work out how best to keep you safe. But if we can’t come up with a plan we’re both comfortable with, I’m not willing to risk it, okay?”

He chuckled. “Okay, but meanwhile, tell me they have a private room we can share where no one will bother us, ’cause it’s been way-too damned long since, well, you know!”

“Do you only think about sex?” I asked, teasing.

“When it comes to you, yes!”

“I miss you, Lysander. I know I’m selfish, but I can’t wait to see you.”

“It’s not selfish. It’s awesome,” he said, comforting me.

“Kaden, supper’s ready!” Elana called from outside the hut.

“If she’s outside, and I heard that, then you need to tell them we need a more private room,” Lysander said, and I almost choked.

“I should probably go. See you soon?”

“See you soon,” he replied, laughing.

The rest of the night was amazing. The locals had done an enormous pig roast and danced the evening away in front of fires on the beach. Just knowing Lysander was coming was enough to make my world significantly happier. I hadn’t even known I was depressed until then. I guessed I was more hooked on him than I ever imagined. Lysander was more than my polarity. He was my source of happiness. He was my hope.

Chapter twenty-seven

Lysander

Themorningaftermydiscussion with Kaden, an airship was waiting for me in front of my mom’s house. “Now, where are you going again?” Mom asked.

“I'm not exactly sure, but somewhere in the South Pacific.”

“I don’t like this, Lysander. You’re going somewhere blind, and didn’t Kaden say it could be dangerous?”

I kissed her cheek. “Mom, this is what I signed up for. It’s part of the gig. I’ll be fine because Kaden will be there. Trust me.”
