Does he really see me in the image of a goddess?

A tingling feeling spirals through me at the thought of the complimenting comparison.

“I don’t want anyone but my fucking human.” Our lips skim closely, almost touching but not quite. “I love you, Kara.”

My eyes open to see the spark of intensity in his iron gaze.

He said it once before. He said it and tossed me into this world before I could even dwell on the statement for longer than an instant.

But right now, in this heart pounding moment, my knees are weak and my soul feels warm and fluid, like it wants to mix with his. It wants to burn within this fire fae just to be close to his heart.

“I love you too,” I whisper.

His lips part and for a second, I wonder what heartfelt things are circling his beautiful mind.

“Fuck,” is all he says in a rasping voice before his lips crash down on mine. The feel of his tongue rolling across mine has me arching closer to him. My fingers dig into his hair and pull him impossibly nearer.

My back hits something hard, the wood digs into my feathers as Darrio pins me to it. His hand raises above my head, steading us against whatever structure is supporting our weight.

Warm fingers drift up my ribs and I’m whimpering against his lips as energy coils tightly within my core.

“You two know you’re not really invisible, right? The wholeI can’t see you, so you can’t see metrickdoesn’t really apply here.” Daxdyn’s muffled voice manages to seep through the shelter of my wings.

I pull back from Darrio with a gasp and faint lines crease around his eyes as he smiles down at me.

“My brother has the worst timing.” He shifts against me. His hard dick is very apparent against my hip.

I’ve been saying the same thing since the first time I met Daxdyn.

Awful fucking timing.

With another unsteady breath, I lower my wings. The cool night air skims across my arms and Daxdyn’s grating little smirk meets my gaze.

“I didn’t realize when you said rejoice you meant right here in front of everyone.” Daxdyn looks impressed with his twin. It’s an odd look that makes me wonder if he thinks Darrio’s uptight.

I suppose he is in a way.

Darrio’s palm slips from my body, and my chest is so tight I feel like I can’t breathe without his weight against me.

“I’m going to discuss plans with Streven.” Darrio’s lips brush against mine slowly, igniting that needy feeling within me all over again. Then he walks away, disappearing into the throng of soldiers.

I don’t know who Streven is, but if Darrio thinks he’s who should be plotting this war with us, then I believe him.

My arms fold as I glare at Daxdyn.

“Don’t pout. His fucking isn’t worth that sour look on your face.” Daxdyn winks at me before slipping his hand into mine.

“And you think you can do better?”

“Much,” he says as he leads me into the heart of the crowd. Slowly, I pull my wings in, letting my body absorb their magic until they’re safely hidden away from the very assessing eyes of the soldiers.

“Where are we going?”

“To mingle, and to have some fun.”

He stops and I manage not to bang my head on his spine just in time. The soft cotton of his dark shirt presses to my palm when I push past him.

Darrio’s gaze meets mine as he speaks with who I can only assume is Streven. Unfortunately, he’s also the fae who called me out in front of all these soldiers.
