Colin smirks. “Welcome to the family, sis.”
“I’m not your fucking sister.”
“Mayson Anne!” Mom screeches using my middle name. I hate when she does that.
Colin steps closer to me, and I grimace. “Not yet, but in two days you will be.”
Those two days came and went, and so did even more torment from him.
I’m busy collecting the bouquets from the side room they were put in which caused one of mom’s many meltdowns for the day. Apparently they were supposed to be in the bridal suite, waiting for her when we arrived. They weren’t and now here I am trying to juggle seven bouquets. Yes, seven. I didn’t know she had six friends, I figured her bridesmaids would be me, and maybe one other person. But somehow she has all these new prissy friends.
The door clicks shut, and I spin around quickly, balancing someof the flowers in my arms. I’m met with that same dark blue stare from the last person I want to see right now.
I’d hoped to keep my distance from him. I thought he would be with his dad the whole day, but that’s obviously not the case.
“What do you want?” I snap.
He raises his hands up. “Just checking to see if you needed any help.”
I narrow my eyes at him. “I don’t believe you.”
He smirks. “You shouldn’t.”
“Get out of my way,” I demand.
“Nah, I want to make a few things clear.” He kicks his foot back, leaning against the door, blocking my exit. “Just because you’re moving into my house, coming to my school, and invading my life, doesn’t mean you belong in it.”
“You act like I want any of this, trust me it’s the last?—”
“I wasn’t done,” he cuts me off and I’m tempted to throw some of these flowers at his face. “If you see anything I do, you don’t snitch to our parents. You don’t talk to any of my teammates. And don’t get a crush on me.”
I scoff and roll my eyes. “I don’t give a shit what you do or don’t do. I don’t care to know any of your stupid teammates and I wouldneverlike you.”
Mom told me he plays soccer, and she thought it was something we could bond over since I’ve played my entire life. There’s no bonding to be had, and I’ve tried telling her that, but she doesn’t care.
“We’ll see about that.” He moves out of the way to open the door again, stepping out first. I turn back to try and grab all the flowers because I refuse to ask him for help. I hear him speak one more time and grind my teeth to fight my reply. “You’re not special just because your mom is marrying my dad. You’re still a nobody and always will be.”
I thought after the wedding and once school started Colinwould want to avoid me at all costs. He wants me to leave him alone, he would do the same for me. That was not the case, and even though he’s a year older than me, he was around a lot more than I would have liked both at school and at home.
It’s like he wanted to find reasons to get pissed at me. He set the ground rules, and then made it impossible to follow them. He wanted me to know he’s the one in charge, but I’ll never go down without a fight. Not then and not now.
We unfortunately ended up at the same college because of the elite soccer program Northgate has for both men and women. My mom was glad my “brother” would be there to look out for me when I went away. Little does she know the only one I need looking out from is him.
Especially now.
It’s the start of Red Card Rites; we’re all warned about it before our Junior year, we all witnessed it our earlier years here. Now it’s our turn. We don’t know when the torment begins, but we know it’s coming.
We also don’t know who picks us, but I do. This is war and it’s a long time coming. I know neither of us are going to hold back.
“Hey Mace, are you coming out with us?” my teammate and roommate, Blake asks.
“Obviously.”
If Colin thinks I’m going to stay home and hide he’s sorely mistaken. I’m going to push him to his limits and I’m going to have fun doing it.
