Afterward, he tugged my shorts back up and crawled up my body, snuggling in with me. We were almost too big for the teepee. “This is a tight fit. I should have bought a bigger one.” Donny rubbed his hand over my chest.
“Were we even seeing each other when you bought it?”
“Ha. No. It was before I met you.”
“Mm…”
“Why are you napping here, Kay?”
I sighed deeply. “I’m kinda worried.”
“Bout what?” He smooshed his face into my chest, and I wrapped my arm around him. He was such a comfort in my life, and I needed to appreciate him more.
I kissed the top of his head. “It doesn’t matter. I love you, Donny. You’re so good for me.”
“Thanks. Love you too. Now why’re you worrying?” He thumbed my chest. “Spill it.” He was so feisty.
“Okay…Okay.” I rubbed his head. “Stressing about the future. What’s coming. What we’re doing. And…well…I have to go back to Florida. Like soon.”
“Hmm…Guess that’s true. Star Fly is finished with their album and all signed with MH Management.”
“They’re opening for us then?”
“They are.” He shifted around. “None of this is anything to stress over. But you know what I do after a stressful day?”
“What?”
“I come home and play. That’s why I have this room. Come on…”
I let him pull me out of the tent. He had a large table on one side of the room with tons of LEGO bricks. We sat there, building for probably close to two hours, until we heard the door to his apartment open, and Saxon called out, “Hey guys!”
Donny jumped up and took off out of the room, and I followed close enough to see him jump Saxon at the door. “Daddy!” He wrapped his legs around Saxon’s waist.
“Hey, hey. Easy. I brought dinner. Take this to the kitchen.” He handed Donny the takeout bags as he put his feet back on the floor. It smelled spicy and tangy as Donny walked past me.
“Yum.” I hugged Saxon. “Thai?”
“Yep. Hope you like what I got.” He hugged me back. “Picked up a little of everything. Let’s eat.”
“I can get used to this.” Donny pulled the dishes out of the bag and spread them out on the counter.
It looked delicious. “Me too.” The afternoon had turned out great. And dinner was ready. Donny was right. The rest of the world could wait.
Chapter twenty-five
Saxon
I sat in my apartment at my little kitchen table, wondering how I was going to make my life work the way I wanted it to. The doctor cleared me for work, but I didn’t want to go back. When sitting alone and being real, I admitted that the accident scared me. And for the first time in my life, I had two very good reasons not to get hurt. Ultimately, my head was fine, but my back stillactually hurt, though there was no real damage. Only bruises, and nothing that kept me from working. The only thing stopping me was me.
Shoving my laptop out of the way, I put my head on the table. I’d been looking for jobs in Florida and not having much luck. Kay and Donny were in Florida more than LA. Although Donny was still in LA, Kay flew back alone to get started on recording their next album, while Donny finished up some work. He did a lot of his work from Kay’s, but there was stuff he needed to do here. Namely, pressing hands with clients located here. This was why Harrison gave him the business. He was the LA guy, while Harrison was on the East Coast. But things had apparently changed since then. That left Donny flying around a lot.
But was that possible for me? I needed to be stationed wherever they were at the most. And I wanted a job where I could take more time off to spend more time on tour with Kay. Especially this next one—their first headlining tour. But they had to record the music first. And that put Kay in Florida.
Giving up on job hunting, I took a shower and got ready to put a Netflix movie on when there was a knock at the door. I opened it to see Donny standing there, grinning at me. “Hi, Daddy.”
“Come in, Donny. What’re you doing here?”
“Missed you.” He frowned. “I miss Kay.”
