“We can go back and question Taylor,” Jack said.

Both Sam and Devons shook their heads.

“I don’t think he has any more to offer. He doesn’t socialize with Dolan,” Devons said.

Sam nodded. They needed to see Clara’s parents. They would know the most about Dolan.

“We need to see the Duke of Claremore.”

“Will they see you?” Devons asked.

Sam glared at the ribbon in his hand, before stuffing it in his pocket. “They will if they want to avoid having all of their actions put in the scandal sheets and all their debts called in. Let’s go.”

“I will stay here and wait for the constable. Send word to the Den if you find out where he could have taken them,” Miller stated.

Sam nodded. They all stepped outside. Hooves hitting the ground made them all turn towards the path they had just ridden down. A man dressed all in black galloped towards them. When he came to a stop, he dismounted and said, “I am Constable Hurley. I have been notified of a potential crime.”

Sam nodded and said, “We believe Lord Dolan has kidnapped my wife.”

Constable Hurley looked at him in disbelief. “You want me to arrest a lord. That is impossible. Are you sure that your wife did not run off with this man?”

Sam grabbed the man by the front of the shirt and scowled at him. “My wife would never go willingly with that man.”

Jack pushed his way between the two of them. “Lord Dolan is angry that Mrs. Kincaide wed my brother instead of him. I will vouch for all of this.”

Constable Hurley raised a skeptical brow. “And who are you?”

“I am the Duke of Peyton.”

The man flushed and said, “I am sorry, Your Grace. I didn’t know who you were.”

Sam rolled his eyes, hating how this man’s demeanor changed upon hearing Jack’s title. He couldn't blame him though; he doubted most would want to go against a duke.

“You said Lord Dolan, correct?”

Sam nodded.

Hurley frowned. “We have recently received a complaint from one of his mistresses about his abuse.”

“Did you question him?”

Hurley shrugged. “All we had was her word.”

Sam, livid, took a step towards him and Devons grabbed his arm.

“A woman comes to you accosted by a man and because he holds a title, you dismiss it.”

Hurley quickly said, “Sir, we have limited manpower and lords are protected unless the Crown intervenes. There is only so much we can do.” He took a deep breath. “I am here to help though. I brought up the other complaint, not to anger you, but because the woman’s statement adds to the case against Lord Dolan. As much as you hate it, arresting a lord is much more difficult. I can’t help the way the world is.”

Sam calmed himself, still furious with the constable’s initial dismissal of one of Dolan's mistresses but they needed him once they found Dolan. He bit out, “He doesn’t just have my wife but a prior mistress.”

Hurley wrinkled his brow in confusion. “What does he mean to do with them?”

“We believe he is not acting in the right mind,” Miller explained.

Devons rolled his eyes and Sam knew he was thinking the same thing; Constable Hurley was not the sharpest investigator.

“I will need to look in the building to see if I can glean any details.”
