There was no other word for it. Even his cheeky squirrel side was silent in his head. A feat that rarely happened.

The weight of the hand on his lower back guiding him down a busy sidewalk and the sticky mess in his underwear told himthat this was no dream. He could feel the warm, soft breeze brushing over his exposed skin. He could taste the air and see motes of dust dance in the rays of sunlight. Every sense was hyperacute. The birds’ cries, the voices of those inside buildings and those on the street, they were all now part of his consciousness.

How?

Was it to do with the winged…

He kept pace with the long stride of the nameless guy—whatever he was—unable to make himself stop for a second and consider what the hell had just happened. Ledger wasn’t always known for being sensible, he knew this. It was why he’d ended up in Bayfield. But this? Even for him, this was an epic loss of any sensibilities. As in, he had none at all.

Zero.

Zilch.

Nada.

How was he going to explain this to Mr. Vaughn? He’d completely missed their appointment. It was totally unprofessional on his part not to show up for a meeting. The contract tied him in for a year and this was not a good start, regardless of the fact he’d considered that taking on the contract was the wrong decision.

First impressions counted. How did one explain they were havingsexand being claimed in a back alley instead of taking an important meeting?

And this is what you’re thinking about right now?

Yes. Yes, it is.

His animal made a noise of disapproval.

We have to pay the bills and—

You’re freaking out.

No, I’m not.

Yes, you are.

Ledger shut out his animal side. He wasn’t going to think about the other stuff. No, because that would mean having to acknowledge that he was freaking out about how he actually encouraged the other man. That wild sex in an alleyway, in broad daylight, with a winged man for anyone to see, was something he’d wanted—craved. He’d not only had sex, he had claimed the nameless, winged man and felt… He didn’t know what he felt, but there was something fundamentally different inside him. It frightened him, even when it was exhilarating.

No, this wasn’t exhilarating, it was scary.

It’s most definitely exhilarating.

As they silently stopped at the side of a large black SUV, Ledger feigned not to have heard his animal side. He was more concerned about how easily he acquiesced to getting into the car when he had his own parked on the opposite side of the street.

Should he suggest he’d follow behind to wherever they were going? No, the very idea of leaving, not being close to the stunner, didn’t sit well at all with him. It left him anxious.

Assisted into the front seat, long tapered fingers buckled him in. The brush of knuckles over his lap made blood flow fast through his veins as he inhaled the rich scent surrounding him. He avoided looking into the captivating blue eyes when he heard an indrawn breath and saw a hint of fang appear.

Was he a vampire bat?

Were they big like that, with huge wings?

Ledger’s fingers tingled at the memory of the silky texture of the feathers as he’d gripped them.

He pressed a hand to his forehead as the door closed, leaving him alone for a moment. He attempted to pull himself together. It was pointless as his gaze tracked the hunk, feeling…

Nothing was in context, nothing. Yet it was.

It was madness. He’d had his body snatched and someone had taken over.

Stop being so dramatic.
