In the darkness, withthe moonglow highlighting his cheekbones, Cain became a living masterpiece with the harsh angles of his jaw and his rakish hair falling away from his face as he stared down at me with intensity.
I ran my hands over his taut back muscles.
He slid a finger up my leg, his nails skimming my inner thighs, his touch forcing me to suck in a breath of pleasure as fire shot to my core.
“Cain,” I breathed, flattening my palms against his shoulder blades, urging him closer. “Please.”
Stilling for a moment, he searched my face. “I hate it when you say that word.”
Grinning, I scraped my fingertips up his spine, digging the nails in enough to scratch him lightly.
He let out a hiss and his eyes darkened.
“Saying please isn’t always begging for something,” I said, pulling my arms through the dress straps and lowering the bodice, exposing my naked skin. “Sometimes, it’s acquiescence.”
When he’d revealed being in league with demons, I’d been alarmed, buthedidn’t scare me. Deep in my heart, I knew he would never cause me pain.
Gently releasing my mouth, he pressed a kiss to my chin. “Phoebe,” he whispered, the soft skin of his lips skating downward to my throat. Flexing his arm to brace himself, he curled his free hand around the top of my hipbone. “Have you ever done this before?”
I sucked in a breath at the blunt question.
“Wow, manners much?” I smoothed the hair from his forehead and stared at the twinkling stars behind his head.
I didn’t know if it was my imagination, but the shadows from the nearby vine barricade seemed to creep closer.
“Answer me.”
Ugh. I don’t really want to go into my past sex life right now.“Yeah, I have.”
He shifted until he blocked my vision, obliterating my view of the sky. “How many?” he growled, narrowing his gaze. A muscle in his jaw twitched, and his nostrils flared.
“Sheesh, calm down.” A guffaw flew from my mouth. “I’m not a slut, if that’s what you’re wanting to know.”
His eyebrows rose, and the dark look in his eyes lightened. “I wasn’t implying—”
“Brian’s the only guy I’ve been with, and you’re the only guy Iwantto be with.” With his quietly smoldering eyes, strange powers, and tragic past, Cain fascinated me as no man ever had. “I want to give you everything, Cain. My body, my heart, my soul.”
Something connected us on a level I couldn’t explain, and my words were the truth. A driving need pulsed within me to be as near to him as possible.
Shutting his eyelids, he let out a long sigh. His hand moved up and wrapped around my ribcage, his thumb sliding under the swell of my breast.
“Cain?” I placed a hand over his.
His eyes flew open, and he moved his mouth to my earlobe, nipping gently. “Yes, Precious?” Hot, minty breath blew against my neck.
His words, spoken with such fervor, created goose bumps on my arms.He feels the same thing.I couldn’t explain what it was, but this unseen connection bound me to him on a primal level, as if our souls strove to entwine with one another.
“I think you have too many clothes on.”
“As do you.” With one snap of his fingers, my dress and everything under vanished, then his suit also disappeared.
“Oh,” I murmured. “Neat trick, show off,” I let my gaze run across his broad, muscular chest to dip down to his tight abs, then lower to his hips.
He definitely works out. My attention drifted farther down, a grin tugging at my mouth before his next words snapped my focus back to his face.
“You are exquisite, Phoebe.” Reaching a trembling index finger to my throat, he traced my collarbone. “If we do this, though, there’s no turning back.”
“What do you mean?”Wow. He’s built like—
