Slick dripped down my thighs.

I stared down at his still body. Leaning down, I pressed my finger under his nose. He was breathing and looked asleep. I grabbed the second blanket folded beneath my pillow and laid it over him.

I hesitated over his face. He still frowned, even in unconsciousness. I would have felt bad, but he hadn’t when he’d rejected me. Anyway, there was no time to waste, I grabbed my phone from the coffee table and clicked on Verity’s number.

It rang a few times, and anxiety crawled down my throat. I didn’t have anyone else?—

“Hello?” Her groggy voice came over the speaker. I exhaled with relief.

“It’s Josephine.” The sound of shuffling ensued.

“Are you okay?”

She was incredibly perceptive and always had been.

“I’m sorry to have woken you,” I said, voice choked.

“Joey,” was all she said. I closed my eyes tight, warmth spreading on my cheeks.

I sighed and said, “Can you pick me up?”

There was a beat of silence.

“Send me the address, going to get dressed and hop in my car.”

“Thank you—” I rasped.

“You know I got you.” The line clicked off, and I quickly researched the closest public area, settling on a gas station a few miles away. I forwarded the address to her.

“You’re leaving?”

I jumped, the phone slipping out of my hands. It landed right on the screen. Quickly, I scooped it up and winced at the shattered glass as I straightened.

Alex cleared his throat. His expression was odd, and he kept focusing hard on my eyes, like pointedly.

Ah, he was trying not to stare at my naked ass. Nudity didn’t faze shifters, so he was likely feeling awkward about the kiss. My face warmed again.

“Are you going to stop me?”

Instead of saying anything, he jerked his head to the swinging door.

“Thank you,” I whispered.

I was leaving the phone. The screen was already fucked, but I didn’t want them going through it and figuring out where I went. I quickly deleted my texts with Verity and her contact information. I tossed it on the ground with a clatter.

“Sorry for the mess,” I said sheepishly.

“No worries, Luna,” he replied, raising his hands.

I gave him a pointed look, and he pressed his lips together, trying not to laugh. Perfect, I didn’t want us to be awkward. Lucian would undoubtedly kill him for my mistake, and it wasn’t fair to Alex.

I shifted and bolted.

Try and find me now, Lucian.

Alex had chained me up in his fucking basement. I paced the length of the room that the chain allowed. Every bone in my body felt heavy—like cement.
