“I did. It wasnae easy and it took some time, but I did what I set out to do.”
“I’m sure there’s more to the story than that.” Daire tapped a pencil on the pad of paper she had in front of her.
“I’ll spare you all the details, but Marie de Medici almost made my task impossible. Her son Louis, on the other hand, helped a great deal.”
“Ye met Louis XIII?” Melusina seemed impressed.
“We did.”
“And ye feel that all worked out as it should?”
“In the end. Robert and Emilie were meant to be together. It was obvious from the verra beginning. Love is a journey. Theirs started out with less-than-ideal circumstances, but they are now verra happy. They married in Glendaloch and me niece will take care of any needs they may have, even if it means they wish to return to their own time.”
“It sounds like ye worked everything out satisfactorily.”
“I believe I did.”
“We’re happy to hear it because once ye have had a chance to rest, we have something new for ye to sink yer teeth into.”
Edna was relieved they were pleased with the outcome of her mission and happy there was at least one more to come.
“Go home to yer husband and William. Enjoy a few days off and then we’ll discuss yer next assignment.”
Edna wouldn’t ask what that next assignment would be. If they told her, she’d probably want to leave immediately to go wherever and whenever they needed her.
EPILOGUE
“We should call Maggie and see if they need us to pick anything up while we’re out,” Robert said.
Emilie removed her phone from her purse and dialed Maggie. A slight giggle escaped her lips. She pointed at the phone as she held it to her ear. This little thing she held in her hand was one of the most amazing discoveries they’d made about this time. Maggie insisted that they each get one, and at first Emilie was puzzled as to why they might need it, but now she always kept it close at hand. The ringing sound ended abruptly.
“Hi, Emilie,” Maggie said when she answered.
“Do you need anything before we head back to the inn?” Emilie asked.
“No’ that I can think of. Maura and Declan are napping, so I’m just enjoying some quiet time before they wake up. Ye two take yer time. Have some fun.”
“We will. See you when we get back.” She placed the phone back in her purse. “They don’t need anything and it seems they don’t need us,” Emilie smiled.
“What shall we do?” Robert asked.
“We’ve been shopping and we’ve walked around the village, so maybe we should go to the pub across the street.” Emilie had taken to life in Glendaloch and particularly enjoyed the lively atmosphere to be found at the local pub.
“I like that idea.”
They took a seat at a booth along the wall. Some local musicians were warming up. Robert and Emilie waved hello to their new friends and neighbors who were already seated at the bar and nearby tables.
“Robert and Emilie! Good to see ye again,” Daniel Calhoun, the pub owner said as he approached. “How are ye both today?”
“Verra well, thank ye.”
“Ale for ye Robert?” he asked.
“Aye.”
“Emilie?”
“Cider, please.”
