My breath came fast and hard. “Is she dying?”
“No,” Sebastian said with false confidence. He didn’t meet my gaze.
“Sebastian, please tell me I didn’t drain her,” I begged. “I’d walk into the sun before hurting her.”
“I’ll escort you myself,” Gianna muttered.
“Gianna, please,” Sebastian said. “You know he wasn’t in his right mind.”
Sebastian exhaled. “I think you stopped in time.”
My stomach lurched. “What does that mean?”
Cassandra rushed over and said, “Let me see her.”
I scooted over while Gianna shot me a dirty look while claiming a place at Nova’s side that she wouldn’t give up without a fight. Although I appreciated Gianna’s fierce loyalty in protecting Nova, I never thought I’d be on the receiving end of her wrath.
And I still didn’t know why. Why would I drink from Nova enough to put her at risk?
Cassandra pressed her fingers to Nova’s throat and then ran her hand palm-down a few inches above Nova’s forehead down to her stomach. What was she doing? Reading her aura, her energy, or some other sort of witchy Geiger test?
She then pulled out a small vial, removed a cork, and placed it under Nova’s nose. Wisps of smoke rose.
“Nova is going to be fine,” Cassandra said. “Let’s get some fluids back in her. And a transfusion.”
Zoe rushed over and pulled up her shirt to reveal a tool belt with countless gadgets. “What do you need?”
“Do you have the healing infusion with comfrey?”
“I do. Lucas grows that like crazy.” She handed a test tube to Cassandra.
“Just a pinch of this will help speed up the healing process.” Cassandra removed the cork and sniffed at the contents. She opened Nova’s lips and poured a few drops onto her tongue.
Lucas stepped beside me and put his hand on my shoulder. “Are you back, man?”
“What do you mean?”
He stared at me. “Do you remember what happened? Why you’re here?”
I glanced around the room. Jagged pieces of memories then floated in my mind like torn up film clips, including one of my ex.
Nova coughed and sputtered.
I broke away and took her hand. “Nova!”
Her eyelids fluttered open. “Diego?”
“Yes, it’s me,” I gasped in my relief. “Are you okay?”
She blinked and lifted her head. I placed my hand under it, helping her up. “Too soon,” she said and rested back. “Still lightheaded.”
I cradled her head. “I’ve got you.”
She gazed up at me from her wide eyes. “Do you know who I am?”
I recoiled. What an odd question. “Of course. Why wouldn’t I?”
Sebastian said, “Oh boy.”
