“Of course, I want to hear about it. My best friend just got engaged—and to a vampire!”
It was great having Gianna over like this, like the many evenings we’d spent together since we were teens, talking about boys and music and what not. Since she worked nights, it wasn’t often we got to hang out and have a girls’ night in. Although I was getting used to staying up later to grow more accustomed to Diego’s hours, I wasn’t a night owl like Gianna or my housemates. Dating a nocturnal male had taken some adjustment. Now that we were engaged, we might face some more obstacles. It opened up a number of questions about our future.
I slanted a glance at her. “Do you think you and Sebastian might get married one day?”
“Nuh-uh, we’re not talking about me right now. Let’s get to it, sunshine.” She sipped her drink.
“Okay, okay.” I curled my legs up under me on the sofa, turning slightly to better face Gianna. I told her the story of how he’d proposed in the bookstore.
She grabbed the end of the sofa arm. “They desecrated a book!” Her mouth opened in mock horror. “I’m still recovering from the tongue-lashing you gave me when I dog-eared a page inCharlie in the Chocolate Factory.”
“Ha ha, that’s something only a monster would do. At least, you still remember the lesson fifteen years later.”
“How could I not?” Gianna grinned. “He proposed with a book? How fitting for a book lover like you.”
“He knows me well.” I exhaled a heavy sigh. “This explains why he’s been so worked up lately. He was thinking about proposing and figuring out a plan.”
“Guys.” Gianna shook her head with mock chagrin. “Let me see the ring again.” When I showed her my hand, she said, “It’s beautiful. Perfect for you. Diego knows you well.”
“Lucas went with him first and was so giddy with all the sparkle, Diego had to ask him to leave.”
Gianna laughed. “That’s funny. Can’t you just picture Lucas being star-struck by all the jewels?”
“Sure can.”
“What you want to do tonight? Talk about wedding stuff? Maybe start brainstorming ideas?”
I exhaled. “No not really. I’d rather relax.” I leaned back in the chair. “There’s a lot to consider when marrying a vampire, so I should talk that over with Diego first and then the Network.”
Gianna raised her hand. “We know one thing for sure—it’s going to be a night wedding.”
I nodded. “True, true.”
We decided to watch a movie. Diego had helped me set up a TV and speaker system a few months back. I changed out of my sundress into super-soft pajama leggings that felt like butter. “Want to wear a pair of pajama bottoms?” I asked her.
“They’d fit like capris on me. I’m fine in this.”
I gave her the remote control. “You find a movie to watch, and I’ll make some popcorn.”
“Deal.”
After I made a batch, separating it into two bowls since she craved hers dripping with butter and covered in salt, I handed her one.
She took it. “I found the perfect movie for tonight.”
“What’s that?” I sat with my bowl of popcorn beside her and propped my feet up on the coffee table.
“Four Weddings and a Funeral.”
“Yes.” I clapped my hands together. It was one of my comfort movies. Soon after I’d moved into the house, I’d been spooked and then watched it with Diego. “I love that movie. An awkward Hugh Grant is adorable.”
She ate some popcorn and then motioned to the screen. “But then again, he was pretty fantastic as sleazy Daniel Cleaver inBridget Jones’s Diary.”
“True,” I murmured. “Maybe we should watch that instead.”
“Let’s stick withFour Weddings. We can watchBridget Jonesanother night.”
While we watched the movie, we chatted since we’d seen it many times. “Are you staying here tonight or going home?” I asked her.
